Default Convincor LS Swap Project Thread

So I have had my 253 for 3 seasons now and I absolutly love it. But, as it is for many of us, I have become bored with the stock powerplant. I was actually bored with it after my first time out. The boat now has a Gen VI peanut port 310hp 454. I have seena best of 64 on the GPS, and that was stripped down. Nothing in the boat but me and very little fuel on a 45 degree day. On the average day, I see anywhere from 58-60. No where near good enough for me!!!! So I have decided to do something about it. My original plan was to build up the 454 that is in the boat. I bought some heads, a set of Lightning headers and even a Procharger. My plan was to put a nice rotating assembly in it and do a blow through carb set up with the blower. But I started looking around and saw like 4 or 5 boats with the exact same set up. So, obviously it works, but I have always been a little bit "different" and I want my boat to be the same way. So I started doing some research on the LS line of GM small blocks. I used to race against them a lot and had a few buddies that made really good hp in their camaros and trans ams. Well, the more I read, the more I was really impressed and the swap should actually not be too hard. So fast forward to this weekend, and with a big thanks to slingblade, I picked up my new powerplant.

Its an aluminum blocked 6.2L LS3. It has a stock crank, Oliver H-beam rods and forged Mahle flat top pistons. It also came with a set of PRC cathedral port heads that have been cnc ported and look awesome!!! My original plan was to use my procharger on the motor, but with this thing being at 10.7:1 compression, that's not going to happen. But my goal is to make in the 550-600hp range for now, so I don't think I will have any problem making that N/A. And, if my research it correct, I will have a 400lb+ weight savings over the 454. That's quite a bit out of the transom.

Here are some pics of what I picked up. It was mostly apart already, but I tore it the rest of the way down yesterday. There was a cam in it that after reading the spec on it, might not be a bad marine cam, but I'm going to call Bob Madera at Marine Kinetics and have one custom made for me. It should be able to be pretty radical too since I will be going with dry to the tip exhaust.

LS motors rock! I would have probably built one myself if I didn't already have everything BBC. I will be watching this as I'm going to play with an LS motor for a future project.

So a little more about my plans. My original plan was to run this thing EFI. I bought a blown up LS1 and took all the EFI stuff off of it, the intake, the wiring harness and computer. But when I started to compute the costs of getting a program to run the efi, new injectors and everything else, that plan changed. So now it will be a carb'd motor. Even though this is a swap that I don't think anyone has done in a Checkmate yet, I am still going to use the K.I.S.S.(Keep It Simple Stupid) method. I ordered the MSD 6010 box to power the coil pack ignition. Its pretty cool cause your timing curves are still all tuneable with a laptop. I'll be running an Edelbrock Performer RPM intake and a 850 Speed Demon carb. I was also able to rob the serpentine belt setup to use off of the blown up LS1. Hardin Marine makes a sea water pump that bolts into the stock A/C location that will allow me to use the serpentine set up with my Bravo 1. Its kind of pricey, but it looks bad ass and makes things a lot simpler (K.I.S.S.).
http://www.hardin-marine.com/p-27009...ater-pump.aspx

The other big ticket item will be exhaust. Most of the big exhaust companies are now making manifolds and headers for the LS motors. I'm going to go the header route and am going to have Lightning make me a set of dry to the tip headers.

Most of the other one off parts I will need I will design and build myself (that's what I do for a living anyways). I will try to update this thread regularly as I collect parts and things come together.

They were just a set of 088 heads. Nothing crazy but great compared to the peanut prt heads. I was going to do a port job on them. But yes, they are sold.
