2001 Evinrude 250 HP FFI Problems

...I did find out the reason the prime bulb would never get hard, the water separator unit was clogged up....

You've probably seen enough suggestions from everyone here to last several years, but I read through this thread and the deal with your filter/separator leaps out. I had a run-in with bad gas a couple of years ago, it took a LONG time to get it all out of the system even after I had put fresh gas in a portable tank and hooked it up. The engine would run for a little bit then shut off. Start it back up, run for a bit then shut off. Start it back up, run for a bit then shut off. After a while of that I started to convince myself that my problem wasn't the gas so I did a bunch of other stuff, none of which did any good. Finally after God had laughed at me long enough the engine would run longer and longer each time, until finally it would keep running.

I know how frustrating engine troubleshooting can be, I was ready to call the guy I bought that boat from and cuss him out for ripping me off. Good luck, and hang in there.

Right now with the help from danrude over on the BBC website, I've got it narrowed down to either the PDP( power distribution panel) or the EMM. We thought I had a bad ignition switch, but ruled that out last night. The fuel issue is ruled out, thru checks and balances according to the manual. What has help the most is Dan has the same motor but a year older so he has went thru all of this. I'm going to pull the PDP this weekend and check the soldered joints on the back, if they're wrinkled that means I got bad connections. If the PDP checks out ok then it's the computer and I'll send it DFI Technologies to have the components replaced and updated software.:(

I really feel for you,Hope this is all a distant memory come July 17th!And don't give up on Boating yet! You'll have all the time to Golf when your old!

I should be picking mine up this next week after a refreshing up of the 2.5,I just hope for a trouble free summer or at least until after the fun run!
Hope to see you down at cumberland,I welcome you and ndanails as fellow campers on my sight at this time!

GOOD LUCK, JEFF

Also should not rule out injectors. I've done a spark and injector test with the diagnostic software. I'm going to do a manual test with a spark tester and a noid light for the injectors. That way I can rule those two components out.

Man... you O/B guys are troopers, I hope you find it:eyecrazy:, I'd understand it if you lost your sanity over this. Good luck.

CM

Glad to hear you have been able to narrow down
the possible problem(s). Frustrating as it may be,
it can only get better, not that that helps.
I am keeping my fingers crossed for you.

Thanks for well wishes guys. The most frustrating part is working on the motor a couple of hrs a day. The brightside is I'll know alot about Ficht motors when I'm done.:D The other problem is I don't know any of the marine techs personally so I don't trust them, especially in the down economy. That's why I'm trying to work threw the problems and figure it out myself.

cm, if you dont mind a little travel i can get you in contact with a tech near lake murray. i have had no personal experience other than talking with him several times but he comes highly recomended and is the tech for our department boats. he is big into performance/race boats. just an idea. real nice guy to talk to.

My brother n law forgot to bring me the spark and noid tester yesterday, hoping to have it this afternoon to do some tests. Monday I got a guy that's suppose to stop by and take a look at the motor. He used to work for a dealership down the road from me that went bankrupt. Hopefully he can figure out the problem, if not I'll send the EMM to DFI technologies to have the computer checked. I've checked this motor over using the trouble shoot charts, the diagnostic software is showing fire to the injectors, fuel pump, oil pump and ignition. I've have come to the conclusion it's the EMM, just need to comfirm it.

Update. I'm sending the computer (EMM) to DFI Technologies tomorrow next day air for them to test it out. At this point all troubleshooting leads to a bad EMM. While they are working on the computer, I'll update the thermostats and new plugs so the engine will run a little hotter to burn carbon build up (recommeded). I've toss around getting a new motor (Mercury) but the costs would be substantial considering the need for controls and props.

Sucks that the EMM is bad since it is not even broke in in my book yet. Hopefully this will fix it and get you back on the water for this summer.

Any motor should at least be broke in before its broken.

I'm tired of dumping money into the boat that I only had out 3 times since the resto.:brickwall: My wife had bad vibes about buying this boat and I should've listen to her.:(

We've never had good luck with JohnnyRude motors in my family, while the Mercury's have all ran well. Strange how things work out like that. I know of J/R motors that have run for 10+ years without even changing the spark plugs!

My 79 OB enchanter had a 200 johnson on it. Great running motor, fired instantly everytime. It was very neglected over its life, looked like the plugs were original, LOL. When I sold it, the guy sent it to a machine shop for them to go through it and they found the block was cracked(was explained to me that they were like the bridgeport motors and it was cracked on the intake??). But it still ran great with the old plugs, no service, and a cracked block!!!

Its all luck of the draw, don't matter if they are black or white. Some are great, some are good, and some are bastard love children:lol:.

Hope you get this resolved quickly. Tough after all that work to have the boat on the trailer. At least by Memorial day you should be good to go and it will all be worth it.

I haven't sent the EMM yet, the ignition switch will be here tomorrow and need to check the relay, solenoid and the cables. I found out this motors had problems with the control cables. I'm also pricing the new E-TECs as well. One of these should do the trick: http://www.evinrude.com/en-US/Engines/ETEC_HO/ETEC_250_HO
