Glassed in boxes in 87 251

Friend of mine just got a 87 251, in the engine room are 2 huge sealed boxes that are glassed in, anybody know what they were for and can you remove them, not open at all, my 89 did not have them...Rob
 
Those are floatation boxes. Just filled with foam. I would remove them! They are huge and really cramp the engine compartment.
