OIL PANS - 455

I've pulled my engine out of my Jetmate to rebuild it or replace it. I'am buying another engine and want to know about the oil pans. I'm not sure that the engine I have in the boat is original or not, was told when I got the boat that the previous owner use to build racecars. I've heard that the oil pan should be a 10qt., I saw a picture of one that came out of a jetboat and it looked like it was square on the bottom (Milidon ?) instead of a stepped down type.
Also I've been told that the power for a Jetboat comes from "TORQUE" not
horsepower. I read a thread last night about people only getting 45-50 MPH from there boat when it was running good. I got 50-55 MPH out of mine the second time I took it out and that was with a bad engine and not WOT. Wished it hadn't thrown a rod on me :yell:. See my AVATAR pic that was with a bad engine.

A 10 quart is the best pan to run,,but I ran the crap out of mine with a 5 quart pan and never once had a problem or loss of oil PSI

Your pump condition and impeller your runinning ie (a, b, or c) and the housing clearance are critical if you want your pump to perform. Think of it as a blower. Alot of peeps also do not do thier homework when it comes to assembling a dependable high output MARINE engine. Its neccesary to pay as much attention to your pump/ intake ect as it is to proper piston size, proper cam, heads, intake, carb. Like I've said for over 20 years you can pay 5k for hot rod car engine, fix it, for another 5k or do it right once for about 8k.

If you are going to build an engine for that jet you basically have 3 choices.
Olds 455: Throw money at it and it will blow up eventually.
Ford 460: Throw money at it and it will blow up eventually.
Chevy 454: (or bigger) Throw money and it will blow up eventually.
With that being said, I would build a Big Block Chevy because parts are cheaper and more available. Of course thats advise coming from a guy that built a Pontiac for his jet.
As far as an oil pan, a large one with reasonable oil control mods will be fine. Most important is the oil that you are using, experiment until you find a viscosity that works for the application. AN OIL COOLER IS A MUST!

Thanks Old Navy,
The problem with building a Chevy is I would have to completely change over everything, wiring, mounts, ETC and probably the jet pump housing (bell housing) and I have been told by several people it would cost me more to do that than to just rebuild what I have because I would have to rebuild the Chevy engine as well. Oil Cooler, nobody has mentioned this before. My boat/engine doesn't have one, is it really neccessary? I appreciate all the help and information all of you have helped me with.
Thanks

I never had a oil cooler on my jetboat. I dont think it even came with one from the factory. A oil cooler is a good idea and I know bigger boats have them from the factory.

P.S. I run a stainless steel impeller "A" cut, with a custom machined shouldered wear ring. Engine estimated horse power close to 500. I'm turning 5400 to 5500 RPM at WOT.

Thanks Jetmate, Mine is a Jacuzzi with a "B" impeller. I'm putting another engine in mine (1971) instead of the old one (1972), but I'm going to rebuild the old one to marine specs. This other one I have is suppose to have a Jetboat cam (Crane Cam)in it. I;m having to put some of the parts off my other enigne on this one but that's o.k. because like I said I'm going to redo the other anyway, that way I will have 2 engines in case one quits on me.
Does anybody have for sale or know where I can find an OIL FILTER ADAPTER for Olds 455 '71-'72?
Thanks for all the help and information

You can still rebuild your Jacuzzi, they sell conversion kits so you can use Berkley style parts on your Jacuzzi. Search Berkley Jet drives, you'll get a lot of sights for parts and info. Also pick up a copy of Hot Boat magazine, lots of vender listings for jets. :thumb:

Hi Jet,
Yea, I have. I have my new engine together and have had it running a coouple of times for just a few seconds. I have it set up on a test stand a friend of mine made for me, he also made some headers for it. I still have to finish hooking up the radiator and water pump pulley which I hope to have done tomorrow. I'm going to run it on the test stand w/radiator hooked to it to check for water leaks and make sure it doesn't have any water leaks into the oil. I would post some photos, but haven't been able too. So I will change my Avitar photo to the last photo I took of it just before I ran it today.
