270br

I recently tried out a 270br with a 377 small block. The boat seemed to run out ok. Later I tried out a 270br with a 496 big block. The big block seemed to porpoise some what and finally smoothing out at WOT. Have you or anyone experienced this? I really like the boat but don't want any problems like this. I realize that it could be controlled with trim tabs but if things are right you shouldn't need them for this. Could it be a weight factor between the small vs. big block?

Thanks Kip for your information. I really like the Checkmate 270br and I'm considering buying one.Anything else I should keep in mind if I buy a used one? Will I be disapointed with the 377?

Prop selection is what is going on there.....that boat doesn't have a tendency porpose.....
How is the hull set up different from the 270 and the 253 Convincor(500hp)?
It doesn't matter which prop I use, and I've had access to all, mine will porpoise until I hit at least 4,000rpm or else i have to put the tabs 3/4 of the way down.
Very annoying while cruising. We could see a Checkmate coming a mile away from the porpoise and almost named ours, "Bounced Check".
I think it's with the X dimension and the positive side is that the top end is faster than other boats with the same or even more hp.

I have heard the trs equiped ones did not porpoise, only the big block bravo ones did...... too much weight too close to the transom?
when we put the v8 in the diplomat, It would porpoise like crazy until I found a Mach Sterndriver 4blade
It is like being in a different boat

I had a 270 with 496HO....It would porpoise some if you just hit the throttle and held it there, very easy to control once you got use to the boat and work the trim and throttle....especially with the right prop.

You might have bit off more than you can chew here Butman. I hate to be in a battle about a Checkmate with a guy that built it. Anyways this thread is 6 years old stop digging up bones. A Checkmate likes to run on the back pad

I have no idea what you're talking about. What battle?
I was surfing thru some threads and this came up. I was just looking for some past info. What's wrong with that?
Old threads are there for good use so that people don't have to ask the same question and get the same answers.
i think you're the one that wants to start something. I posted that almost a year ago so who's the one digging up bones?

"A Checkmate likes to run on the back pad"

Hey Big Red, I forgot to order the pad on my boat. I don't have one.
thanks for helping.

First off you are right my fault old thread. The back pad is located on the bottom of the boat. I hope you did not buy one of the proto types that where made without the back pad. Only 10 where made between 96-97.

Well, looks like I have one of those 10. Not dissappointed. Boat runs great.
So can I stay and play? You seemed to be having a good time last night and burning my Buttman today.

Pad keel, on bottom at center from 6 to 10 in wide going foward 10 + ft depending on hull length
Pad Keel's are faster than V bottoms but do have a few drawbacks
I could be wrong, but I have not heard anyone with the trs setups having the porpoising problem----is that from the motor being further forward?
