exhaust turbulators

Well-known member
has anyone removed the exhaust turbulators from a 496 or any other engines? some people claim hp gains by removing them, but is it worth the risk of condensation in the engine?

From what I remember reading, most thought it was a non-issue if the boat is outa the water at night (less condesation). I was looking into the raylar kit when I was thinking about a boat with the 496 and read up on it... I'm sure you've seen this thread over on OSO: http://www.offshoreonly.com/forums/general-q/156444-496-dyno-testing-myth-busting.html.

Removing the turbulators gave 8hp on the dyno.

Raylar chimes in on this issue here on page 2: http://www.offshoreonly.com/forums/general-q/156444-496-dyno-testing-myth-busting.html

I talked to Raylar a long time ago on the phone when I was looking at a ZT240 with the 496. But, I spent quite a bit more than planned on the garage and I ended up buying the 24.

Not an exact awnser, but I'm hoping it helps the decision some.

yes i saw the stuff on oso, never realy got a yes or no on the issue. i stay on the lake overnight and its in the garage year round. they claimed 100 rpm gain which would be about 2mph for free if it works.

My shop has removed these from several different boats, baja, superboat, ect, ran them all on gps before and after with no difference in performance, ddt showed no increased rpm. The owners decided to put them back in. When we supercharge these engines, they are removed.

usually about 10 - 12mph. had a superboat that gained 14mph. we have never dynoed one, no one wants to pay for it.

procharger works great. i am turning a 28 bravo 5000 rpm. how many rpm will i gain by removing the turbulators? i am on the edge of re proping now, i can turn a stock 30 with no real gain in speed but it slows down acceleration.
