exhaust

TRACY

New member
I have just been given a 1962 Jetmate. It has been in a garage for 36 years in storage. Good condition. My lake has a rule against running any boat with above exhaust. Does anyone know if it is possible to covert this boat to underwater exhaust?

Considering the age of the boat, could it not be looked upon as a classic.

The questions to ask...Would your lake association consider make an owner of a say classic wood haul Chris Craft with original through transom exhaust butcher their boat? If not what is the differance then.

I do know that some will allow the use of over transome exhaust if they are wet.

Good luck.

What state do you live in. I would not change a thing run it the way it is. If it came that way from the factory their is nothing they can do about it. Dry exhaust ran over the top has been outlawed in most states for safety reasons due to it being a huge fire hazzard

I live in Illinois. They have told me if I put silencers on it I can run it on our lake. Do you know where I could go to get the value for insurance? The books I find on line only go back to 1975. It is a '72 with about 30 hours on it. Yep, 30 My Uncle died shortly after he bought it........

there are several jet boat only parts websites outthere

milidon for olds motors (need spellcheck)

i lost a lot of links the last time i sent my laptop in for repair

post some pics we would love to see it

good luck daren

oh what motor, jet, or accessories does it have?

depending on your motor look for bassett wet headers

should be able to buy them with silencers
or maybe silencers for your headers

daren

I bought all my parts from Tom Morrow of Smithville MS 662-256-4018. He is good people and been Racing jetboats sice 1960 and is one of the best pump builders around. He also knows a Checkmate. Your boat insurance is no problem. Just go with a stated value policy. If that boat is as good shape as you say I would atleast put 10,000.00 on it. Because a Checkmate jetboat is very hard to come by. If your headers look like mine in pic below they do sell baffels for them.

Thanks for the info. I pick the boat up this Sat. Can't wait. One more question, how do you get in or out....where do you put the ladder?

probably stating the obvious but.....

Thanks for the info. I pick the boat up this Sat. Can't wait. One more question, how do you get in or out....where do you put the ladder?

hate to ask this because it sounds TOTALLY AWESOME!!! but...

dont know your knowledge of boats so please excuse me if i am stating something better left unsaid or missed a posting... what are you doing to get it water ready, after sitting that long dont just turn the engine over to fire it up.

many would say pull it and rebuild. someone of vastly greater knowledge than i will respond to this post but after more than a couple of years you will likely have some rust in the engine and i know nothing about a jet pump. after 30 years dry........

i would at the very minimum... change gas, oil, plugs, filters, etc. also, if your grandfather did not get to winterize before his passing the block or pump may be cracked from freezing. if all looks good then.......

pull the plugs and shine a light in the cylinders to see if rust is visible in each cylinder (if not shoot a little lubricant like miracle oil in each one as they are dry), same with valve covers - easy to pop off and put back on to see if the valves, lifters and cam have obvious rust. again if no rust, i would pull the distributor and spin the oil pump (if it is like todays gm blocks thats how you do it) with a drill for about a minute or 2 to get oil up into the lifters, bearings, cam, crank, etc. it would be a shame to see a motor like that tear itself apart it 10 seconds with only 30 hours on it. the oil valleys will be so dry it will likely do just that if proper steps are not taken!!!

if one of the really knowledgable people posts that they would only rebuild first then LISTEN TO THEM!!! it is easier/much cheaper to have a shop pull it down and put back together clean than having them rebuild a blown motor that has locked itself up due to lack of oil. you would probably add 1-2 thousand dollars to the bill vs preventative steps now.

I'm lucky to have found a person who has worked on older Checkmates in the past here in Illinois. He has already said we could be in for a long haul. I'm tryinig not to get my hopes up too high but it would be great if all we had to do was to replace all the gaskets and get it ready for the water!!!!!!!!!!!! My Uncle did winterize it before it went into storage. We'll see how well he did in the next week or two. Thanks for the concern though! We currently have a pontoon and a jet ski at the house so I do have a little knowlesge but it is very limited. I do know that this boat will be nothing like our family pontoon. LOL A couple of friends of mine keep trying to tell me it's too much boat and they should drive it.....I told them that guys aren't the only ones who enjoy big toys that go fast! Thanks again for the concern.

good luck with this project.. i rarely get to see a pump boat anymore, much less any of the lil v drive set ups.. pm me, i still have my sidewinder w/ a 455/berkley.. and my v drive cambel. love both the boats.. its getting harder to run them now, with all the boat traffic.. seems the lil guys are getting pushed out down here.. at least we have no tailpipe laws yet.. most the boats around here don't even have silent choice

lemme know ifn i can help

The boat sits so low in the water its easy to just flop over the side to get in. Thats a good thing about your jet boat no water pumps. The jet drive pushes the water threw the engine. The Checkmate jetboats are a blast to drive wake jumping is killer and when you land it feels very stable. When you are airborn it feels more stable than a Convincor. Good luck on your test run. If you do not have a Foot throttle I would put one in it makes it more fun to drive and easier to dock.

Former Southwind Tunnel Dragster owner (pontiac powered) Let's see some pics, I love jets, but with the low profile of mine, I had to wait until the big boats went home to run it. I had Rewarder OT headers with baffles and never got hasseled by the cops on the bigger lakes. I did get thrown off the lake I grew up on because the association president told me "that's not the kind of boat we want on this lake". What a PR*CK!! Anyway, baffels will help you keep a low profile and the guys with open headers will take the heat. Good luck finding insurance with any type of over the transom exhaust.
