Fianlly!! I tested a -2 Imco shorty

Well it took me long enough. I have been searching for a used -2 Imco for a while. Finally, I found one for sale about 1/2 hour drive from my house. I still dont believe I found one locally. The lower was virtually new. Test time only on it. The only bad thing was that it has Imcos old style tapered vertical shaft. Not a good thing, I have broken one before. A new one is about $550. I tore the drive apart ( because I am anal, and dont trust anyone ) , the internals were like new. The gears didnt even have a wear pattern on them. I took those gears out and set up my spare set of cryoed gears I had sitting on the shelf. I will send these new gears out to get treated and keep them for a rainy day. I decided to roll the dice and not go for the new style vertical shaft yet. I figured, if the boat didnt like this lower, why bother spending the money on the shaft? If it worked out, then I would swap shafts. Last year I very briefly got to test a -1 Imco lower with good results. Being that the results were positive, I wanted to see what a -2 would do.
Heres what my first test day resulted in. First the conditions. 85*, humid and dead flat water. Not good for speed runs. In my experiences with this boat and the standard lower, I would expect to run 80 mph in those conditions. In good conditions, I can run 83 with the standard lower. My first concern was getting up on plane. I eased the stick forward, next thing I knew, I was up on plane. :bounce: I thought to myself, that was easy, lets see what happens when I turn at cruise spped. I trim up and settle in at a nice easy 60 mph cruise, come to the first turn, drop the drive as I uually do and turn. No blow out :bounce: . OK, that went well, push the stick forward , hit the trim and lets see what happens. No stability problems, speed comes up. Tops out at 82.6 mph. My best ever under those conditions. Although the testing is far from over, it seems that I will be able to gain at least 3 mph. I am hoping this weekend brings some chop in the bay and some rollers in the ocean. I am still wondering what will happen when I attempt to take some jumps. My guess is I will be fine. Being that getting up on plane was no problem at all, I can only assume, the prop shaft height is still ok. I did find 1 problem. My tach seems to have had enough. It is the factory 6000 rpm tach from Checkmate. It was reading 5700 rpm at top speed. Spinning a 25" Hydromotive P5-X at 5700 rpm, with a speed of 82.6 mph, equates to only 7% slip. I dont think so.. I plan on bringing a clamp on digital tach this weekend to check it out. My guess is I was spinning about 5900 rpm, with 11% slip.
More testing results to come..

congrats on the new lower!!
cant believe that pos factory tach only lasted 8 years

checki loves to use those cheap crapy merc gauges when there is so many better gauges for only a few bucks more.

sounds like you got a good drive there - hopefully it behaves as well in the rough stuff!

Great to hear Vinny, I talked to checkmate242 a while back and he also had good results from his shorty on a 242......

time to start shopping i guess!!

what, if you dont mind me asking, did you have to give for the drive? what should on expect to pay?

thanks

we'll it's been a while since we've chatted Vinny...Glad to see you've found your -2 shorty, I know you've been looking for at least a year or more. Does your boat have the factory VDO gauges? That's what mine has. I was wondering if they're good. Mine are 20 years old and they all work perfect.!

Not that this is a fair comparison but, I sold my Baja 265 Force to a couple from Canada last year. He brought the boat to a man in Canada that raised the entire drive/engine atleast two inches. They also removed some hook from the hull and removed about four feet of inner strake. He's running a single 454 Mag MPI and he's running 66.7 mph. He gained 6mph from all the work. It seems there's a lot to gain from drive height adjustments on boats setup with very conservative x-dimensions.

Where is your propshaft in relation to pad ? Are you still a few inches below ? He was contemplating trying a shorty yet to see if he can gain any more.

Good luck with the transformation,

Keep us posted !

boatn70,

I got thise lower for next to nothing. I only paid $2k for it. But remember, I have to upgrade the vertical shaft for about $550. Still a deal in my opinion.

charlie,

I am not sure what brand the tach is. Whatever Checkmate used back in '99.

hotbeek,

The prop shaft is still 2 1/2" below the keel. My hull does have a small transom notch just in front of the drive. There is alot to be gained by messing around with the bottoms. Hiwever, do it wrong and you will end up on your head. I for one, dont know too much about that, I don plan on touching it. I am confident the factory set the bottom up for the best all around performance.

Update for those who are interested. I ran it in the ocean today. Pretty rough stuff . 4' rollers with 2' chop in between. The rollers were close together, too close to jump for fear of crashing into the next one. The results are great. No cavitation, no blowing out, no nothing. Ran great. Still could only muster 83 mph in the bay. I am hoping that with a lighter load and some better chop, I'll get 85. I did get to verify the accuracy of my tach. It is off by about 300 rpm. I am actually spinning it to nearly 6000. That puts my slip to about 12%.

Tomorrow I plan to try out a labbed 26" Bravo 1. I dont expect that to run as well as my current P-5X, but what the hell. May as well try it out.
