fuel consumtion mercruiser 454 in a zt280

senator-holland

Well-known member
what is the fuel consumtion on a 454 in a checkmate zt 280? in a hour?

and with a 24" prop what will the top speed do?

i used to have a 5.7L mercruiser senator. and a day waterskiing was 100 euro. 70 liter gas with a 100 liter/30 gallon gastank

the gas prices are something like 1,8 euro per liter= 5 euro a gallon overhere. so the main question is to keep it running on gasoline or to rebuild it on LPG.

there is a 280 on the internet which is located in the mid west wich i am interested in. they are asking 38000 dollar for a 280 of year 1998.

Stock engine ball park speed 63 mph It all depends on how hard you run your boat how much fuel it will burn. A 454 in a boat that size will get double the gas mileage when compared to a boat that size with a 5.7 in it.

If you are talking wide open running for one hour your engine will blow before you run out of fuel.

Regarding gas consumption....you assume the worst and you do'nt worry about unless your making a really long trip on the water and you need to fiqure out where to refuel. On my 21' with a 5.7 liter in it I can go weeks if I'm just getting out a couple of times and not running hard. But when water skiing, I've burnt thru 30 gals in a day.

Best case fuel consumption on that boat is going to be right at 3mpg, probably around 25-30mph. That's about 10 gallons per hour.

A 24P prop sounds steep to me. I'm running a 23P on a 23.3 foot Glastron 454 (385hp) - The CheckMate is longer, but it's probably a heavier boat also. A stock 454 is 300-330 hp. A 24P may be too much prop.
The best way to judge is to get a GPS of top speed and RPM at that top speed. This will indicate if you can use more prop pitch or not.

Gasoline is approching $4/gal in the states also. I don't know what the cost of LPG is and I've never seen a converted boat. I do know that LPG doesn't have the same amount of energy as gasoline and you'll suffer a further decrease in fuel economy, so consider that if you decide to convert.

Best case, if converting to LPG, raise your compression to get more volumetric effiency.
