Hydraulic steering sources and DIY

Precision

Member
Hey guys and gals, a few questions

1. Does anyone have a "how to" for hydraulic steering?

2. Does anyone know of anyone that has put an extension box on a Convincor or Maxxum? My thought here is, with the extention box not only will I not have to drill more holes in the transom, but the boat "should" go faster. I'm trying to get close to a surface drive.

I know power might be an issue to get on top of the water, I'm aready looking at a blower wich should put me around 650-700HP.

3. Without the extention box would a single ram set up be ok on a 28' Maxxum or should I go full hydraulic?

Any thoughts?

I put the XS Performance dual ram full hydraulic system on my ZT230.

I installed it myself using the instructions provided by the manufacturer, and, although it took much longer than expected, it was partly due to being very carefully before drilling holes in my transom. The system is VERY beefy and has worked flawlessly for me for 4 years. The attraction at the time was that the system was almost $1,000 cheaper than the same Mafair and Latham systems. One thing to look at right away is your helm set-up. The valve system goes in behind the steering wheel and XS gives you a hub to which to attach your steering wheel. I had to have the hub costom-drilled to make it attachable to my helm (the bolts didn't line up correctly, as I recall). I'd give Brain Alfey a call at XS and check out his prices. He was available and helped out by cell when I did my install too.
