Importing a boat to Canada from the USA

Hi there. Has any one imported a boat to CND from the USA lately?
How did it go? Did you have to send title to US boarder 72 hours in advance?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

No you don't have to send it in advance, you need the title or MSO for the trailer, and you need to make sure there is a compliance sticker on the trailer, you don't need a title for the boat, bill of sale will work, and a seperate bill of sale for the trailer, can't be on the same bill of sale, if you have this it will go smooth, I was at the border less than 10 mins, at the border you will have to pay whatever the tax is in Ont and $195 RIV fee for the trailer, within 30 days you have to take the trailer to canadian tire for inspection, the 195 you pay at the border covers that, pretty painless, most important part is the trailer title, without that don't even try.

I wonder how they handle it if the state you live in doesn't provide a title for the trailer? In NY a lot of trailers use the transferable registration as proof of ownership. Don't want to derail the thread but its something to consider.

Bill of sale and provide a VIN and your state will make a title.

Dad's trailer didn't come with a title because WI doesn't title trailers, they had the MSO (manufacturer's statement of origin) so that worked, Bob at Roberts marine said it's possible to get a title from the state but it's a big PITA, they couldn't find the MSO for this trailer at first and I almost ended up buying a different trailer, lucky they found it.

Also if the trailer is 15 years or older you don't need a title at the border, just a bill of sale will work.

I know a guy who just brought a boat back from the states and he didn't get the $195 RIV fee or paper work. He ended up going to the ministry of transport and registered it as a home build. Any one ever hear of this?

If it's older than 15 years its exempt from the RIV program and you don't pay the $195.00 or have to get it inspected.

Thanks again John. I see you've done your homework on this one.

I thought I'd found a provincial tax loophole here. Guess I'll just have to be happy my trailer isn't old.
