Prop Selection - 1997 Checkmate 253 Convincer

Cory

New member
Hi - first I would just like to thank you for providing such a wonderful site. I haven't been a Checkmate owner for long but I have already learned a lot here.

I have a 1997 Checkmate 253 Convincer with a 454 Magnum and a Bravo One Drive. The motor is Carborated and I'm not sure of the horses.

My question - do you know of the right prop/pitch, etc. for my boat? Also, does anyone know the horsepower of my 454 Magnum and what speeds I can expect with the right prop?

First day with the new boat.

Thank you very much

I believe your 454 puts out about 350hp with an operating range between 4600-5000 RPMs.I would think a 23 Mirage 3 blade or one of the Bravo 4 blade props would work for you.One of the members here (Vinny) has a similar boat and could give you his 2 cents also.

Hello Cory and welcome,
I am not certain of the horsepower rating on a carbed 454 Magnum. I know the MPI motors from that year and newer are rated at 385 hp. I would imagine that the carbed motors are a little bit less. As far as props, what are you running now? What rpm's are you seeing? I have a basically stock 454 Magnum MPI, I am running a labbed 26 Bravo 1. I can turn it to 4950 rpm. If you wanted to run a box stock prop, I would have to say that either a 22 or 24 Bravo 1 4 blade would work for your motor. Personnaly, I prefer 4 blade props, you can't beat the additional mid-range you get with a 4 blade over a 3 blade.

I forgot to mention.

To date my engine mods only consist of Gil Offshore exhaust, Vortech flame arrestor and adjustable fuel pressure regulator, MSD 6M-2. Next winter I plan on a Whipple Charger.

I swing a 23 Mirage 3 blade at 4900r's with a 330hp 454 in my '90 GTX 251. There has been a few mod's, cam, intake, Exhaust, and some head work. Est. hp. would be near 400. Would like to try a 4 blade

You can expect upper 60's for speed. your motor makes 365HP and should be propped at 23-25 pitch. If you have some speed info (GPS) for a current prop and rpm we can help you better. I would try a 25 Mirage plus or a 24 bravo and go from there. It's easier to go down in pitch than over rev the motor. If you try a 23 be careful not to exceed 5000rpm.

Scotty, I need more power!

cory.
I own a 96 253 convincer with a 454 mag mpi. when it was stock I ran a 24 pitch hydromotive quad 4. I run in very confused water and the 4 blade handeled much better than the 3 blades. I had run 67 mph with it, on gps. None of the 3 blades were any faster, and they didn't have as high a cruise speed. My guess is you might try a 23 q-4. by the way your motor was rated @ 350 HP in 97, the exact motor was rated @365 hp a couple of years earlyer, same engine differnt way of ratting them.
