Question about Imco lower unit

What do you think of an Imco lower unit? I have heard good and bad. Heard that you should gain a MPH or so but heard from some that they have lost MPH with an Imco. I have a 20ft Senator with a built 350 with an Alpha lower on it now. I have a chance to get a Imco shortened 2" for a pretty good deal. Thanks in advance for the info/help.

A Imco lower will not work on a Alpha drive, They are for Bravo's only. They can slow a boat down with stock power that will not run over 70 mph but not in all cases. It's like putting a nose cone on a stock rig.
They have less blowout and put more water to the prop. If you don't have the power to pull the new upgrade it will slow you down.

Also depends on hull design and x dimension. Almost all newer cats benefit from a 2" shorty but most run over 70 on stock power.

High performance V-bottoms with big HP also benefit by better handling and higher speeds.

But you may not see much improvement on a v-Bottom untill 80 mph or so. again it depends on the hull and setup.

Unless it's so cheap that you can resale it and make money I would not buy it if I was you.

Good answer MK, i was asking the same question today. There are no guarentees when it comes to shortened lowers. In theory they should go faster simply due to less drag. But that's not always the case and it's an expensive gamble. It sounds as though your senator has a bit of improvement elsewhere before diving into an Imco. It starts with ditching the Alpha!

what kind of speeds you runnin now?

ive, done a lot of reading on these, as said before its a gamble, from what i gathered a lot of guys reported poor handling, with not much of a mph gain, and others said they loved 'em, but everything i read was on 25'+ boats.

let us know if your end up with it.. and post some results!!
