SET UP FOR PULSE 185

I HAVE A PULSE BR, A 1996 MODEL, WHICH I BOUGHT NEW IN 98 AND RAN IT FOUR YEARS WITH A MERC 175EFI AND MANAGED TO GET RADAR 70 MPH WITH SET UP ADJUSTMENTS ETC. BUT TO GET REAL PERFORMANCE GAINS I DECIEDED TO BUY A 280 HP 2.5 WHICH I RAN LAST YEAR SET UP AS FOLLOWS. I HAVE A CMC HYDROLIC JACKPLATE WITH 11 INCHES OF SET BACK, SET TO RAISE ABOUT 1/2 INCH BELOW THE PAD AT IT'S HIGHEST POSITION ( I PLAN TO GO 1 INCH HIGHER) SO THE CENTER OF THE PROP SHAFT WILL GO UP TO 1/2 INCH ABOVE THE PAD . I HAVE RUN VARIOUS PROPS BUT THE BEST PERFORMANCE IS RUNNING A 24 INCH LIGHTNING ET WITH THE JACK PLATE ALL THE WAY UP . I RUN 85MPH GPS AT 7500 RPM WITH NO CHINE WALK BUT I FEEL THAT THERE SHOULD BE MORE TOP END . I HAVE TO RUN ALOT OF POSITIVE TRIM TO GET THAT SPEED. DO I REALLY NEED MORE SET BACK ? WHAT ABOUT THE PAD, I DON'T THINK THERE IS A HOOK. HOW DOES SHARPENING THE PAD AND THE CHINES WORK? I NOTICED A 45 DEGREE BEVEL AT THE BACK OF THE PAD AND CHINES WHERE THEY MEET THE TRANSOM- SHOULD THE BE SHARPENED? WHAT ABOUT PROPS, I HAVE TRIED A 24 TROPHY AND IT RAN 82 AT 7300 RPM THE BOAT HANDLED GREAT WITH AWSOME HOLE SHOT BUT IT DIDNT REV ANY WHERE CLOSE TO RED LINE. I HAD A 25 INCH TEMPEST PLUS THAT WENT 83 TO 84 AT 71OO BUT TO GET SPEED I NEEDED ALOT OF POSITIVE TRIM. DOES ANY BODY RUN A SIMILIAR RIG AND WHAT HAVE THEY DONE. BY THE WAY, I DO HAVE A BOW COVER FOR THE BOAT WHICH I RUN ALL THE TIME,[ ITS GOOD FOR 4 MPH MORE SPEED AND THE BOAT IS NEVER LEFT IN THE WATER SO WATER LOGGING ISN'T AN ISSUE. IDO HAVE A WATER PRESSURE GUAGE.

The Pulse 185 is a heavy hull with zero aerodynamic lift. You may actually be going as fast as that hull will allow. The only thing I can suggest is keep playing with motor height. I assume you have the sportmaster on that motor, so the elevated trasom heights are OK. Most Checkmates need the propshaft about 2" below the pad to fly, but you gots LOTS of power and probably the sportmaster, so 1" below the pad to even with the pad may be your sweet spot. You'll have to keep playing with props to find one that lifts the bow enough for you to run the propshaft level with the water surface. Have you tried a new Chopper II? That has more lift than the ET.

And yes, if you sharpen the chines and the rear edge at the transom the boat will go faster. Checkmate bevels those edges to make them much stronger than a 90 degree edge will give you, but the beveled edges also slow you down a bit. Is it worth a few mph to lose strength in that area? Sharpening the chines and rear edge on that boat will take a LOT of hard work. I personally wouldn't do it.
If you really want to scream, put that motor on an Allison SS2000 or STV. You'll see speeds in the one teens or better with one of those hulls.

Yeah, 80MPH Plus with a 185 is very, very, quick. I don't think you'll get much more out of it. Perhaps Kip will chime in and give us some hints. /infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

3 words, prop, prop, prop. To agree with the rest, you are probably out of boat, but you might be able to squeeze a couple of more mph out of her by running a prop that is designed to be out of the water, hence a surface piercing prop. Your "generic" round ears are not designed to run that high and more than likely you have already lost speed by running those props that high. Also, remember, your boat was not designed for that much power, that is why an Allison or STV, ect can run those speeds with that h.p., they are made for it!
