Stereo Installation Question...

Alright Rick and all you marine experts out there. Here is a question for y'all.

Last year I decided to replace the factory installed cassette deck in my mate. Now as many of you are probably familiar from your own mates, the old deck fit into a weather proof case that has the little door that swings shut to keep it dry.

However, I purchased a top of the line Clarion marine deck which doesn't require the weather proof case and was also too large to fit into it anyway. So, the problem I have is in order to fit the new deck into the old hole I had to put an aluminum plate over the hole to cover the extra gap that was there and also give me something to mount the deck to.

So now I want to come up with a way to finish off the installation and make it look nice. I thought of buying some of that phoney burled oak wood stuff, but all I could find were complete sets that were intended to do the interiors of an assortment of vehicles. And what I really would need is just a rectangular piece of it a little larger than my deck that I could cut.

So the question is, has anyone run into the same situation?

And/or, does anyone have a suggestion as to what might be a nice way to trim out the install and finish it off?

Thanks....

Chris, You cn easily make a trim piece out of King Starboard. If you are not good or do not have wood working tools to finish the edges, I am sure you know someone who can. Only takes a few minutes to make the trim. As far as to what to mount the stereo in, you can get stereo recepticles or plastic boxes so to speak that will flush mount in the hole. Overtons, West Marine, ect. carries these. You may need to do a little trimming of you existing hole, but that is easy, just mask it off to keep from splintering, get out the jig saw and cut. Gets dusty, but very easy.

Actually, I'm really good with wood. But what the heck is King Starboard and where do I get some?

As for the boxes etc. My deck is really large, it almost fit perfectly into the old hole which had the waterproof holder. Unfortunately there wasn't much left to attach the new deck to, so I put a piece of aluminum on to the dash and mounted the deck through it.

King Starboard is a polymer material that will never rot and you can work with it just like wood, only easier than wood. Since you would need such a small piece, Kip might be able to send you a piece of scrap. Mate now uses it in there boats in some areas. If Kip can't get you any, When I needed some< i did a search in google for king starboard and it gave me a couple of place to get it from 4'x8' sheets to scrap pieces. If you live in a large boating area, a local marina or ships store might have some. Most commonly, it is found in white.

Yeah, I looked around and checked the stuff out. Pretty kewl! Is the 1/4" stuff strong enough do you think? And what the heck color would match the standard gel white, assuming I try to match it versus go for black or something?

Here is a link to the actual deck so you can see what it looks like.

Clarion

I read there is a adhesive to glue this King Starboard stuff. I gather I could glue a new oversized piece to the dash?

If it was me Chris, I would use white, it will blend right in with the gel coat. I would not glue it, I would drill a hole in each corner, counter sink it and use #8 s.s. screws to fasten it. You can buy the s.s. crews with white heads on them so it all blends. Be sure when you attach the srews, use a screw driver, not a cordless screw gun and put marine silicone on the threads themselves, it helps lubricate the screw and hole to prevent cracking and seals it. If you have never drilled into fiberglass, drill the hole as close to the screw size as you can. Unlike wood, if the hole is a bit too small, it will crack the gel.

Now I just have to find a good supplier. This stuff is not cheap! Anyone online that you have found is good to deal with Bill?

Chris, no, it is not cheap, but the piece you are looking for is so small, it should not cost more than 5 bucks or so. I used it mostly when I lived out west, there were so many boat builders, you and I could re-do a complete interior on what they throw away in one day. These place would give it to me, it was scrap to them. Check you local (bigger) marinas. I would also check with Kip, they are using starboard in boats now (great to see). I will check around today on the net to see what I can come up with for you. Remeber, if you make some phone calls looking for a piece, give them the approx size you need, and tell them scrap. I used to find that if I would call a place and ask do you have any pieces of 5"x14" starboard I could by, they would say no, they just have sheets, then I learned to ask, do you have any 5"x14"(approx) scrap laying around, bigger will do, can I buy it. THey would say, come on over and grab what you need. I know, just a word game, but it made a differance. I will look around for ya' today

Starboard is some good stuff. I have used it a lot on various projects. Just remeber that it will stain easily. You have to be careful where you use it. Also make sure you DO NOT use a pencil or pen to make your marks. These will leave marks that will not come off unless sanded. I always did what Bill did and gathered it at local marinas. Boaters World has it too!

Kewl!

Thanks fellas....judging by todays weather, I'll have a few weeks before I get the mate out to measure the size I need.

Believe it or not, Oxy clean has removed everthing I have ever gotten on it, including pencil. Ink is another story though, I keep pens out of boats because I have never found anything to remove ink. I used to mark my spots when I knew it was exactly where it needed to be with a fine pencil point. That way when you make your cuts and holes, it dissappears.
