Tyler Crocket Marine engines

Hi folks,

Anyone have any experience with Tyler Crockett Performance packages for a 496MAG? I am looking to upgrade my engine in my ZT260.

I looked at Tyler's upgrades last year. There was a Checkmate owner that was on both this board and OSO who seemed to be the guinea pig for Crockett's upgrades that included substantial head and exhaust work and a swap for a MEFI 3 ECM. I tried to contact the guy by e-mail to get his final results, with no luck. The last posts I saw were that he was having trouble getting the ECM properly programmed - spent alot of extra time with Tyler on it - seemed to get it worked out, though, and saw some substantial speed increases, which is what it is all about - Raylar has reported good dyno numbers from his upgrades, but I'm yet to hear of many people getting good mph increases. In fact, have corresponded with a guy with an Outlaw that picked up just 3 mph after 6k plus and lots of headaches. The guy with the Crockett upgrades did post that his fuel consumption increased dramatically, but you gotta pay to play. You might consider saving up for a Whipple to get the best bang, but they're apparently on back-order and unavailable. If you do try the Crockett upgrades, please post the results - might be a good choice if you've got just the 496 MAG - Tyler can swap the cam and use the MEFI 3 to get you that extra 50 hp right from the start. Good luck.

Tyler is claiming with his upgrades it will increase with the stage 1 kit to 540hp and about 8 mph.Stage 2 will be at about 600hp. Will cost about 9k. 12k with stage 2 kit.He also discouraged supercharging the engine claiming I could tear it up without building it up. Who is Raylar?

I know Tyler personally. He is a good friend and runs an awesome operation. If he is recommending something I would take his advice. He is "King Ding-A-Ling" when it comes to his biz! Everything he can do is worth the price. Raylar is a Big performance part manufacturer, they do blowers, cyl heads, intakes, cpu's. They make good shit! I strongly recommend using Tyler. You cant go wrong at all!

Thanks...just trying to do my homework before I sink money into it. The boat is great. It is at Checkmate now and they are redoing some trim tabs that were installed too low. No wonder it was only going 61.

I had one of his motors in my 23' Warlock world-class mini-offshore, it was a 89 octane 538hp (dyno) beast and gave me mid 80's with ZERO problems!!! He builds a nice quality product...

Other than the $$$$$ part, you will be very happy!!!

Thank you for the info...yea he wants about $9000 for his stage 1 kit: 540hp. Says it will add about 8 mph or so. Folks that install prochargers say to expect about 12mph. Wish I knew who to believe.

He cautioned me on procharging a stock 496 as the engine may not be up to the charge..pistons particular. I do not want to procharge then rebuild. Only have 70 hours on boat. Anyone have stock motor experience mixed with a 3.5 or 5lb boost?

Liquid Missle...
Is that $9000 for just the supercharger kit or is that complete with motor mods done on your boat???
I wouldn't recommed running a stock motor with more than 4-5psi, thay can self-distruct without running them with good lubricants, correct warm-up and cool-down, and tuning/set-up correctly. The stock valves, pistons, and rings don't like the extra heat "boost" causes. For longevity and maximum benefit of the supercharger, the motor should be built for supercharging and run an intercooler for the extra power and added safety of cooler motor components.

On the flip side, I have done several "carbed" Weiand 177 supercharged 454 mags and a 502 Mag with excellent results and NO melt-downs staying 5psi or less. In fact, my buddies boat had 300 hours before the blower was added, and is now reaching close to 600 hours without ANY work other than maintance and checking the tune of everything occasionally... and it is NON-intercooled! Note that this is the same small 177 supercharger Merc uses on the 525SC motor, and they are very durable as long as clean air is going in (always run a K&N flame-arrestor type filter).

The 9k is for just engine stuff...no supercharger. Heads, camshaft, roller rockers, headers, reprogrammed ECU and a few other things...and for 12k, 3K more, you can go to stage 2...HP intake manifold and forged pistons 600HP then. All without the Supercharger.
Can you school me on this 177 Supercharger? I am very limited on the space in front of the engine. Sorry for my ignorance....but getting educated will make it FLY

The Weiand 177 is the "old-school" type supercharger that mounts on TOP of the motor. Merc used them on their 525SC motor which was basically a 454 Magnum carb motor with a blower. You can run them with a CARB or a throttle-body type EFI system.

You need to put a pencil to the TOTAL cost of this motor package by the time it's TURN-KEY. There are a LOT of motor choices out there if your looking at the $10K-$20K by the time your all set... Take a look in the back of POWERBOAT MAGIZINE at some of the motor packages offered, they are fully assembled dyno'd packages at decent deals. You can save your stock motor for boat resale some day or just sell it to recover some of the big HP motor costs. Then your weakest link becomes the outdrive which will need upgrades as well.

I thought at the beginning I stated what I had...sorry. I have a '03 checkmate ZT 260, Bravo X drive and 24 Bravo prop with a 496 Mag. Would like to get into the mid 70's to low 80 mph range. Kunkles is telling me that it is difficult to procharge the engine due to restraints forward of the forward pulley. Would have to move the seat and hatch. I understand Raylor has a performance package that will give 525hp for about 6K.

Let me know and thanks.

I found you a DEAL!!!
