Wax/Polish/Maintenance Recommendations for New Checkmate

byrd

New member
Thanks to your advice and recommendations last summer on a separate thread, I purchased a new Pulsare 1600 BR with a 115 Opti last winter. I am a few short weeks from putting it in the water for the first time, and would appreciate tips and recommendations about waxing/polishing/maintaining a new boat and trailer, particularly the gel coat on this new Checkmate. I have restored a used boat in the past, but this is my first new boat.

Any advice about how to care for this new purchase outside instructions in the Merc owner’s manual surrounding the outboard would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Again

flitz polish followed by nu finish works awsome! if the boat is new I would just use nufinish on it! dirt does not stick to it like polishes with silicone and you don't get water spots as easy! and for the interior use a damp chamois instead of chemicals and keep the interior covered when not in use! My spectra is a 1988 and has always had a cover for the interior and it still looks like new! and as far as the trailor wash it regular and grease it! Short term pain avoids long term restores!

i have been told buy a fiberglass refinishing guy to only polish the boats - wax builds up and will eventually yellow the hull. don't know where you're from but i found a product in canada that's called "aurora boat shine" works great - you could get 2 years out of one polish job - i do it 2 coats every spring within 24 hours of each other. don't used acidic based cleaners ie spray nine or super clean on the interior as it eats the stitching away. i'm also not a huge fan of armour all.

We are using leverage instead of the conventional marine waxes after the boats shine is up. It leaves no build up or residue & has nothing in it to dull or yellow the gel or paint after prolonged use. It works nicely &goes on & off easily.. If it interests you we are also a distributor for it.. :) Jamie / Lakeside

All this talk is making me nervous. This year I used Meguiar's 56 Boat/Rv Pure Wax. A little went a long way (about 1/3 bottle for all 21' of boat), easy on/off, and it looks great. Any experience? Build-up, dulling, yellowing?
