West Bay Traverse City

18ft checkmate

New member
I was out on West Bay yesterday evening with my two little ones - there was a red, newer Checkmate putting in at the same time we were. I'm guessing it was 24-27'. Really nice boat. Anyone know if this person is on this forum?

i boat on west bay all the time. actually have a season pass for the elmwood marina ramp, never seen the boat you are refering to and have not heard from them on the forum...

Trim

I'm learning ... tonight the water was amazing. I was out with a buddy - he's got a 25' Outlaw - nice boat. We ran to Power Island for a bit, and on the way out, it got more choppy. I found (for the first time) that if I trimmed it just right, I could sail through the waves no problem at all ... no pounding, no coming out of the water, it was amazing, really, because all previous times in rough water I had the trim all the way down and we took a pounding - it seemed like I couldn't go more than 10-15 mph. THIS time I ran about 50mph 99% of the way out there IN THE CHOP and sailed through it - no pounding, nothing. It was really amazing how smooth it was.
