Whats the best Prop?

KILLSHOT

New member
Hey guys, I just bought a 99 convincer 220 with a 7.4L MPI @ 310hp and just trying to get the best prop. I know thats about as stock as you can get but hey. At least thats what im told. I have run a three blade Mirage plus 24P and got 62/63 mph @ appx 4500 rpm. The dealer put a 4 blade Bravo 1 24P on and says thats the one to try next. Hopefully this weekend I can get the feul tank empty enough to run it and compare. I'll let you know how it does. Any suggesstions?

You'll probably find that the 24 Bravo One turns at lower RPM. When I went from the 24 B1 to a 23 Mirage Plus I picked up almost 300 rpm. Not sure what the rpm range is at WOT for that engine, but where you are at now sounds low to me. Find out the rpm range and then find the prop the puts you right at the upper end with just you in the boat. In your case that might turn out to be a labbed 22 B1 or the 23 MP, labbed. That'll get you the maximimum speed.

I,m pretty sure a 24 B1 is to big for your setup they are equiping new boats that 425 hp with a 24 B1. JY is right you need to go down to a 22B1. a 4- Blade prop has less slipage than a 3- blade thus lowers the rpm more. you will like the 4-blade when you have the right one. prop your boat to turn max manufacturer recomended rpm @ w.o.t.

Ok, just to make sure I understand this so far. You guys agree its the 4 blade Bravo one that is probably going to be better, its just a matter of finding the right pitch? If so, im told my rpm limit is appx 4600/4700. I tend to agree because the rev liminter kicks in at those numbers.

KS: You'll find the 4 blade handles better with better hole-shot - less time to plane. Mid-range rpm speeds will probably be about the same, give or take, but you'll see 1-2 more mph on the top-end with the 3 blade. This all assumes you can max out the rpms with each prop. Check out an article in this month's Family and Performance Boating Mag. They were trying to prop a 22 foot scarab with upgraded power (496 HO). Tried a bunch of props, including 26" Bravo at 4800 rpm = 67.6 mph. 25" Mirage Plus at 4800 rpm = 69.2 mph. Not similar to my results, so maybe the 24 Bravo will work for ya. You'll just have to try, but I'm betting your rpms are gonna be way low. And I just re-read your post where you say you ran a 24 Mirage Plus - pretty sure they don't make'em in even sizes, so were ya running a 23 or 25?

JY: Someone else told me that the rpm's will be alot lower with the 4blade 24P B1. If that is what happens this weekend, then i'll probably go with the 3blade 23P Mirage plus, and lab it. It's just wierd when i see everbodys else's performance boat using 4 blades. I wonder if it's because they have heavier boats?

Killshot,
4 blades are A touch slower but give you better overall performace . Peek rpm range On that engine is about 4800 .
Dave

My boat runs faster with a 4- blade 30p bravo1 750 hp there is to much slipage with a 3- blade there is a cut off point for power to wieght ratio. If you can turn the same size 4-blade at the same rpm as a 3- blade your going to go faster because a 4-blade has less slipage. best thing to do is call hydramotive tell them what you got they will recmmend a prop right for you or very close they are very familiar with checkmates

Try a 23p Tempest plus. You can find a very good used one for $250.
What I have found testing props on my 20' Senator with 454. The Tempest Plus may not handle as well as the 4 blade. It seems to lift all of the boat better then the Mirage and adds 1~2mph on top. So far the Yamaha 27p Pro-M is the fastest and quickest on my boat but IMO the Tempest is very good.

Killshot Go ahead and give throttle up propellers in st. pettersburg Fl. a call. They gave me a sweet deal on my labbed laser 2 for my senator around 500 bucks . I even sent it back for a little more tweekin after i ran it with no extra charge besides shipping.Great people to deal with. Hole shot/control=4 blade. Top speed / sloppy ride =3 blade. Top speed or control. U pick

Killshot...
go with a 22p Bravo 4-blade. The 24p will be too much. You need to get that motor up towards the top RPM range and you'll still have a good holeshot... The 23p Mirage may be 1-2mph faster up top, but slower out of the hole and mid-range cruise speed will be 2-3mph slower than the bravo. Bravo is the BEST overall prop!
