zt240 with 496 ho

New member
hi guys this is my first post,
well i'm lookin at a 05 zt240 with the 396mag ho 425 hp.
she's a left over from 05 price is good but i'm wondering if the 496 is a little much for a 24' boot. i guess there never can be too much but this is my first performance boat.
thanks

ZT

We have a 24 foot Enforcer with a 7.4 MPI - 310 HP. While you have more HP(425), you don't have to use it all at once or all the time. It's kind of like fast cars. The first time you get on it hard, you sort of scare yourself...but then you do it again because you liked it. After a while you get used to the performance level and want more. We are creeping up on wanting more HP for our boat, and a swap or a supercharger would be the next step. When you get used to a certain performance level on your boat, all you need to do is open it up a bit more until you get that scary fun feeling again :thumb: ... with 425 HP it should take a while unless you have already been in really fast boats. 60MPH on the water feels a lot faster than it does in a car!! but then there are some guys here running high 70's with smaller outboards...

As far as Insurance, they tend to go on value of the boat, locale where you use it, and finally HP rating... kind of like pricey insurance on muscle cars. We are with Progressive in southwest Florida and it is about $440 per year for full coverage...

Hope this helps

Dan

ZT - I wouldn't buy a 240 with less than the 496HO. I've run in a 240 with a 350 mag (300 hp), and the boat ran 58 mph gps with two people. The 6.2 would probably run a mile or two faster. Even though you may be new to performance boating, you'll be looking for more speed in no time. I've read elsewhere that the 240 runs about 73 mph gps with the big-block, although I've never seen it personally. There's a world of difference between 60 and 73 mph - and you're gonna like it. I'm running a 496HO in my ZT230 and actually wish I had a bit more. Go with as much power as you can afford now, because you'll just be looking to upgrade down the road anyway. Go for it.

I got the best price on inc. with Safeco
SafeCo will eventually cancel you. They don't insure boats that run over 55 mph. They recently have started going thru their list of insured and reviewing. I got cancled in February.

State Farm and Progressive are very close...I'm currently with Sate Farm. $495/year on a 2001 270 with 496HO, full coverage and $500 deduct.

well thanks for the help. i'm a proud new owner of a leftover zt240 w/496mag ho. any advice or problems to look for would be great. she's goin to be on cayuga lake in ny. look out upstate there will probably be alot of baja's for sale after this summer :bigthumb:

My 24' has a 454 with 430 hours. No complaints yet!!

I had my insurance through boat us but they cancelled because the boat went too fast. I know am with Marine Underwriters at $459. Alot of insurance companies will say they will insure you then cancel you once they start to go through the paperwork.

Congrats on the new boat! Good choice. I've had my '05 for a year now and am very pleased. The graphics are great and the interior work is exceptionally good.
The only problem I had after delivery were leaks into the cabin from above. It turned out to be the pop up cleats. My dealer fixed them under warranty and have had no trouble since.

Moyer, What town you from ? We will watch for you on Cayuga. What colors are the graphics on boat and what type of graphic ?
If you are near the cove at Union Springs, look for myself and Grover 251.

well i'm from ithaca and my new ride is the white and red flames. hopfully we have a good season, always look forward to new friends o the lake

You'll want more

The mod bugs will hit you after a few times out this year. Pretty soon you'll find yourself trying to justify the cost of a whipple or maybe something like a 525EFI. You'll find that your motor fits that boat pretty well...I wouldn't want anything less.
