Pointers on reinstalling Alpha 1 outdrive

Removed the outdrive to replace engine, gimbal bearing, bellows, trim sensors, and shift cable. Now I cant get the outdrive back on, It will go all but the last inch or so and stops. I tried pushing it on a bit, doesnt move much, then it hangs up and is VERY difficult to remove.

I checked the engine alignment with an oak dowel (proper alignment tool has been ordered). It looks pretty good, but even if it wasnt, I dont see any shims, or adjustments.

Any suggestions??????????

hardest thing for me is keeping thev square cut oring in place

if it folded it will hang up the drive

Yup, exactly what i ran into. I took it off, lubed the snot out of the o-ring, gimbal, and shaft, and got it to the same place...the interference point with the o-ring.

At this time, the stud threads were through the upper enuogh for me to get the nuts on. I put on 4 and torqued them evenly, about 1/4 turn each past 0 lash . I then turned the crank by hand, and shook the outdive, and it went "clunk", and bounced in. I could then push the drive home by hand.
 
Thanks for the advice, after destroying a gasket or two I have been trying to fit it with out the gasket and the square O ring. I am close to putting the gaskets on and pounding it in with a 5lb sledge hammer.
 
make sure the drive is in forward and the gear shift is in full throttle foward, it won't go on otherwise.

line up the shifter on the drive (male) and the linkage on the bell housing (female) - it should be pretty easy to see - once you are down underneath. the drive will not go on if you don't have that lined up - dollars to donuts that's your problem

Yeah, thats typical.......Ended up not being that bad of a job. Maybe next time I will make note that only people with usefull information need to reply.
 
I never have been able to use the big square o-ring on mine, had the drive off 4 or 5 times and try to use it every time..... end up putting it together without.
 
worst advice EVER!!!!!:sick:

I thaught the same until I "F"ed mine up and had to pay...that is pay through the nose for more than if I would have done it right the first time. Rebuilding my '64 Cuda was easier than re-installing the outdrive and making sure it was sealed up properly. I'll do every think else when it comes to the motor etc, but outdrives and I do not mix well.
