Need more Southerners!

I used to live in Meridian Mississippi and bought 2 Checkmates from Mcminn Marine in Meridian. There was a Checkmate dealer in Vicksburg and Anderson Marine in Birmingham and Cullman Alabama. But hey, nice thing about Checkmate's is not seeing a bunch of boats just like yours. Do you know the mating call of the Southern Belle? Yooooooh I'm Drunk!!!!!

I've got everything on the one server now, so my expenses went way down. So that leave me some money that I can use to develop a few more sites.

ByuMatez! Might make a good dating site also. :thumb:

Coop.

You better get the Mate truck tuned up so you can start delivering down south! :thumb:

Knocking Atlanta...

I sure don't get "carving the metro Atlanta area" out of the south. I have family in Birmingham (Meadowbrook) and thought they were good folks over there. I attended the Alabama homecoming game last fall in T-town and even thought about going to A-day this month. I bet Jamey has flown out of the Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson Airport, maybe have even been to a Braves game and possibly been to the Atlanta Speedway.

I haven't been to Lake Martin, I have been to Guntersville up north. I boat mostly on Lake Lanier. I am spending the July 4th week on Lake Gaston up in the Yankee territories of North Carolina and Virginia. I guess I am going to have to tell the boys up in Forsyth county (Lake Lanier) that Jamey doesn't think they are part of the south - them boys gonna be pissed for sure!

Jamey, where do you want me to turn in my confederate flag that used to fly on the light pole on my Checkmate?

Wow, it is clear that Jamey has never been to central Florida. Just because we have more then a bunch of hill-billies living here dosen't mean we are not southern. Yeah if one goes to one of ower big cities simular to Atl or one of our big beachs one will see nothing but a bunch of yuppies, yankies and tourist. The company I work for that has thousands of employees makes most of its profits from Agriculture. I have been to Bama and saw plenty of things that are not southern at all. I better stop now before I say something not nice.

You're all Americans right?

And we're all North Americans!

We've got pretty similar values and we've got our freedom man.

To me the rest is pretty insignificant.

With all the other crap going on in the rest of the world, we've all got bigger fish to fry. ;)

Let's not ruin this thread.

Boys boys ... all in good fun, right?! As for my reasoning, I can account for all my comments ... Atlanta, any city that has worse traffic than New York City, Chicago and Los Angeles combined no longer possesses "southern charm." I have spent significant time in each of these places, including Central Florida, where I do feel for our bretheren who have been drowned out by any former New Yorker who is now over 65 and has taken over the State. Before you argue back, I'll refer to the "hanging Chad debacle" as my Exhibit A. Mississippi, well, being from Alabama, where we consistently rank next to last in every national survey, well, we love Mississippi because they are the only State that sometimes ranks lower than us (in education, per capita income, healthcare, etc. etc.)

Geez, I've never seen so many people eager to be held up as "Par" with Alabama. I hate to break it to you fellas, but in many cases that is not necessarily a good thing!

As for the Bammers, there is no greater blight on my beloved State than a University of Alabama fan! I'm Auburn to the core ... War Eagle guys ... War Eagle!!!

Hey GCHILDRE,

I have a co-worker with a 28" Convincor who spent some time with the in-laws on Lanier, says it was one of the nicest lakes he has been on (albeit he was on the in-laws pontoon). The largest man made lake in the states? I'm heading to FLA in June and am considering trailering my Convincor down there. Is it worth the detour to Lanier?

If you're looking for Southern, you'd better include me. I may live close to the coastal tourist area now, but I'm from Mid SC closer to GA - out in the middle of nowhere. You should hear me talk.

Lake Lanier...

lt133,

Lake Lanier is a good lake for boating, it is not commercialized, more homes than anything else. It is an Army Corp hydroelectric lake, built in 57 (50 yr anniversary this year) it has almost 700 miles of shoreline. Being man-made it has lots of coves and creeks off the main lake (Chattahoochee river) that are great for cruising, speeding, tubing, skiing and just floating and swimming. Being an Army Corps lake the lake levels fluctuate, GA and FL are always in court over how much water goes through the dam. There are many parks and Army Corp camp sites and ramps. Some of the camp sites you can launch your boat and camp right next to the water.

See this link for the Army Corp site recreational map and general information. http://lanier.sam.usace.army.mil/ParkRecreationMap.htm

The main lake gets a bit busy on the weekends, it's not uncommon to have 2' chop out in the middle. I stick mostly to the creeks and coves, of course there is the cocktail cove down by the dam where rafting and partying are the main activity. Lots of PWC's to look out for, I have learned that the smaller the craft, the smaller the common sense of the driver. I would love to take a 28" convictor out in the main lake at full throttle. There are lots of house boats and big cruisers that live on the lake and too many boat ramps for me to count. The ramps are mostly Army Corp and they are top notch(there are also commercial marinas). Last year the water level was a bit low but being man made it takes a bit of stupidity to find the bottom with your expensive parts. I have seen 120' on the depth finder in the middle of some creeks.

I couldn't tell you if it is detour material but it is definately a good lake with lots to explore.

I have looked for other Checkmates out there but haven't seen any. If you take the detour, let me know. I travel most weekends for work but make it up there quite regularly.

As for Jamey's exclusive southern thing, I really don't get it at all. Maybe if we southerners got together we could bring more Checkmate owners to the site. I purchased my Pulse from the original owner and I know he told me that he bought it new locally in Georgia in 2000. I have looked for a Checkmate dealer around lake lanier but I haven't ever seen one. If there was a dealer here representing Checkmates front and center over the other wannabe brands we would have more southerners on this site.

I love the south, Atlanta and my Checkmate.

Roll Tide Roll

Don't think anyone will dispute me. I have a 2004 Pulsare 1850 with an Optimax 175, I boat on Lake Pontchartrain and the many bayous around my home in New Orleans, LA. I also visited Lake Martin in Alabama last year and will be making this an annual trip. My boat survived Katrina and Rita with no damage and was not, uh, borrowed by the authorities. I have been out once this year and am looking forward to this summer. Back in the 70's/80's there were alot of Checkmates around here, shiny metal-flake rockets with large outboard engines. Now, mine is the only one and I get lots of interest from the locals. We will be in Lake Martin around the third week in July, anyone else?

John

I keep mine in dry storage at Logan Martin, well north of Lake Martin. Lake Martin is beautiful though ... one of the prettiest lakes in the State. I used to go there some when I was in school at Auburn. It's only about 20 to 30 minutes away. Tuberville has a house there, along with several assistant coaches. Martin has become a "high rent" district as far as property goes around there, but it's well worth the drive!

I will be BAMA bound the 3rd week in june I have family that has a house on Lake martin. I am going to drag my boat down this year if it makes it threw Atlanta in 1 piece. I'm going to try to go threw their around midnight.

I live in N.C. and have been in bolth places Alabama and Mississippi and their is one thing that stays in my mind about each state.

Mississippi = I do not want to be on a back road after dark without a m16 or a local boy with me.

Alabama = The only place I have ever seen that in a convenience on a back road sold beer on tap by the glass. The beer tap was in the middle of the snack isle.

I am not putting down anybody. I still drink from a quart jar and eat mator sandwiches

Texas still thinks that it is still its own country. So it might not.
Ha now that is true! I bet no one is as fas south as I am (Del Rio, TX), so sorry Bama guys, ya'll have a few more lines of latitude down to go :)

Oh and PS, no one knows what the hell a checkmate is around here!

IF YOU DON'T THINK TEXAS QUALIFIES AS "SOUTHERN", TRY SPENDING A WEEK HERE IN AUGUST!!!! ALTHOUGH I THINK THE HOTTEST PLACE I'VE EVER DONE ANY BOATING WAS AT A RACE ON THE OHIO RIVER IN HUNTINGTON W.V. IN JULY.NOT A LOT OF CHECKMATES DOWN HERE , THERE WAS A DEALER IN IRVING TEXAS WHERE I BOUGHT MY TRIMATE IN 77, BUT THEY BEEN LONG GONE FOR 20 YRS. THERE WAS ONE IN WACO , BUT SAME STORY, CLOSED IN THE LATE 70'S. IN 36 YRS OF BOATING I HAVE SEEN 1 MX-15 , ONE MX-16 , AND ONE TRIMATE II , OTHER THAN MINE ON THE WATER AROUND NORTH CENTRAL TEXAS. I THINK TEXAS WOULD FIT THE MOLD FOR "SOUTHERN" AS WE HAVE PLENTY OF REDNECKS AND I CAN TELL YOU WHERE TO BUY A QUART OF FRESH CORN WHISKEY IF YOU NEED SOME.

Thanks for getting that in TONEAL. Atleast I can throw my bid in for a Southern Checkmate owner. I was born in Texas, will probobly die in Texas. Spent alot of years in Irmo, SC living on Lake Murray, Lake Murray is where I got my bug to own a Checkmate. Have ridden my Triumph from Texas-South Carolina on more than one occasion, and the ride through Alabama, Georgia can't be any prettier. But we are all in the same boat here...Checkamte.

I'll have to defer back to Coop's assessment of Texas, I thought you guys still considered yourself your own country! It always amazes me that I can leave Birmingham and drive to the Texas/Louisianna state line, and it would be faster for me to turn around and drive back home than to drive to the opposite side of Texas!
