might look at getting something smaller to fit in garage. who has modified their boat with jackplate, larger motor, etc. and what speeds gps are you getting. I guess the 170pulse-185 or 186 have a small pad?? thanks

This is from a older post when I was setting the Pulse170 up:

This is my best setup to date w/ two people full tank of gas (32gals) and cooler in the boat. I had started out at 3" below pad 6" JP w/23P Tempest Plus and worked my way up. I'm now 2" below the pad, I've added water scoops and 25P Tempest prop. The weather was hot (96*)and sunny, wind about 10-15 mph slight chop. Before my best was 70mph, yesterday 74mph GPS. I think I could've hit 75mph but had to slow down for no wake zone. Since the engine is raised up pretty high I've got little chine walk now.

So the new setup:
Pulse 170
Merc 200HP EFI
6" Jack plate
25P Tempest Plus 2" below pad
water scoops

numbers

i have a 186 cd.. 8 inches of setback with a 175 merc efi.. spinning a labbed 25 pitch prop and i'm hitting 69.5-69.8 mph. running 1" and half below the pad.

the big problem i think and somebody correct me if i'm wrong but what i've heard from some people around my area is that the "pulse" line has more hook in the hull than the pulsare.. if i were to do it all over again i would start fresh with a pulsare hull. which has less hook and equates to more speed.

my set up

Hey Ive got 1984 checkmate Enticer 16'3" Im running 200 merc blackmax 6" land and sea jack plate, lowwater pick bobs nose cone and 21p ss work prop run it about 2" under pad and get 67mph out of it I have second prop 26p ss prop and goes well over 70mph plus its starts to chine walk up there even with motors up but I just back out of a bit on foot pedal and it seems to smoothen out boat wieght is around 850 900lbs fun to run will jump most boats out of hole stands straight up out of water was olny desiged to have a 125hp from checkmate

186 Pulse
200 hp. Merc
10" set back jacked up
25p turning point classic

74 MPH GPS driver only running on fumes

My closed deck 1992 Pulse 171 had the 1992 2.5 liter XR6 150, with the XR6 gearcase (4 1/4" diameter, 1.78:1 gears), 6" setback, 26" Laser II prop. 69 mph.

thanks

thanks for the replies. i'm just trying to compare to my hydrostream vking. what size pad, if any is on these smaller checkmates...? A vking with a 200 merc is easily a 90mph boat, but of course it only weight 650lbs. On the streams we run about 1" above pad, or as high as you can and still have water pressure, more stable there, and usually run a cleaver prop for upmost top end or a chopper/srx prop for general use, but they will still get within 2-3mph of the cleaver. It looks like most people with these smaller checkmates aren't running that high and are using thru hub style props...

A V-King with a stock 200 will easily run 90?? Not saying it can't be done but the setup would have to be perfect and a light hull to run 90 with a stock 200. I have had V-Kings and they are great boats but I would have to say a stock 200 on a pleasure hull would run more like low to mid 80's.

my 185 pulse br 7.5" j/p 175 merc carb w/ worked up 21plaserll ran 64 gps . my norm is 55gps w/ 4bld alm full tank of fuel & at least 2adults 2 kids ! not the speed demon ,but puts smiles on my families faces !

vking

no, a properly set up vking with a stock 200 is a 90mph boat. when i mean properly set up,,,,jackplate, low water pickup, propshaft about even to 1" above pad, correct prop....it's pretty common. I'm not talking about some guy with a motor bolted straight to the transom, with motor buried 6" below pad, and a thru hub exhaust, not to mention he doesn't know how to drive it on the pad. They do have to be set up properly as far as weight port or starboard etc.... I'm sure if you posted on screamandfly you'd get the same answer from quite a few. I do understand that the 650lb hydrostreams are different from the chekmates....I know that. I liked my hydrostream, i really dont think there is a better looking hull than the vking. Oldschool no doubt. I did not like the fact of the water coming in the back of the boat if you stopped suddenly, and the rear "wings" basically even with the water at rest....I'm looking at getting something that is a little higher in the stern, can support a heavy motor, has a pad bottom to get some speed, is a bowrider so i can have a little more room. I also like the fact the checkmates are heavier so they can handle the chop better and have a sharper bow to trim down etc...
