Mariner 225

Hi Guys,

I might go look at a Mariner 225 this weekend. From what I have read, it is a mercury in a grey suit.

I really can't find any reference on prices. Are these motors usually more, less or the same price as a mercury and are the connections going to be the same or would i need to purchase adapters/replacements. I was assuming that I was going to have to re-wire to some extent anyway, but hoping to at least be able to use the existing steering.

Also, will I have issues finding parts are are all the parts pretty much interchangable.

It's a Mercury painted gray. If I remember correctly, evrything under 55hp were made by Yamaha, and everything bigger was a Merc.
 
I just put a Mariner 175 on the back of my Predictor today, it had a Mercury 150 last week. Same wiring connector (as long as it's a similar year, they changed the main harness pins sometime in the late 90's I think) same bolt pattern, like everyone says, it's a grey Mercury.

Thanks guys. I figure I will have to change pins just becuase of the years anyway (87 to ??). I spoke with the owners dad and he didn't know a ton about it. Once I get the serial number and more specifics I will probably post some more dumb questions.

Hi Guys,
Went and looked today. They were not sure, but they think it has a "high performance" new lower unit on it. It's hard to see, but in the first pic you can see the holes just below the nose. Is this is what is considered a low water pickup? Also, is the skeg supposed to be bent, it is just a hair off at the back but looks "stock". I'm assuming that this is a feature and is offset to compensate for the prop rotation.

Props? I'm assuming anything that fits a mercury outboard or do I need a special one becuase of the different lower unit?

And it is only a 200...

Yes, small curvature in skeg is normal for prop torque. Definitely low water pickup, any idea who did the work? Looks pretty decent to me... how much $$$?
 
Agreed, Low water pickup and looks like a nice install or maybe a factory unit? Torquemaster or sportmaster?? The "bend" in the skeg may be an add on torque tab, or read below...

Torquemaster Traits

In addition to the oil drain being located below the propshaft on the bearing carrier, 2.5 litre torquemaster gear cases also have:

* Only 4 water intake holes per side
* A cast boss approximately 1 inch in diameter located approximately 4 inches directly above the water intake holes. The boss is drilled and
tapped for a water intake when a nosecone is installed.
* Skeg is cambered on the trailing port side edge to minimize
steering torque when running the engine high.​

Best I can tell it is similiar to the one below. It had a cover on where the braided line is.
He wants $3K for it. He is letting me take it to my marina to have them test it out. It's in pretty good physical shape, consideing the year. Has some scratches, etc but no cracks or major dings. Found out it was on a superboat so who knows how hard it was run....

I think it only has 2 holes per side.
I'm picking it up on Sat (I think), I'll post back with what the marina says.

BADBK, what work would be involved? I would assume you would just bolt a new one up. The dad told me his son paid big $$ for it when he had them change it, but didn't really know anything about it (like why it needed to be changed:)).

Next dumb question: Assuming where the water pickup holes are, i'm assuming that you need to be careful in shallow sandy areas, or does it not really matter that much what gets sucked up.
