trim limit woes

Hey everyone. I have recently replaced every maintainence item on my persuaders outdrive including the trim switches. all works as it should except for the trim limit feature. My shifter has only one rocker switch on the handle. My last boat had a separate switch for the trailering feature. So what I am asking is. Does the trim switch on this shifter double as a trailer switch too. I ask because if I trim down it works fine and shows the position on the gauge , But if I trim up and she goes all the way up without stopping at where the limit switch would cut power. I can drive it like this by just watching the gauge but I would rather fix it so it works as it should. Can someone give me a clue here?......Rich:brickwall:

What. Nobody here has any idea? Could it be that the shifter assy. is the wrong one for this application? I say this cause the kill switch on the shifter base does not work and it already has a kill switch on the dash and that one does work. what do you think? Should I just change the whole thing out . If so which one? Come on guys I'm buggin' here. :brickwall:

Rich your shifter does not look original to me and should have the trailer switch built into the shifter from my experience. I'm sure some others will chime in soon but looks nothing like my original Persuader shifter. We have different year boats but our shifter does not look original to me.

Just spoke to a guy here at a local marine shop and he is also in agreement that the shifter is probably not original. He also tells me he can replace the shifter in under an hour. For less than 500 bucks. That works for me but being the diy'er that I am, maybe I can tackle it myself.
I say, how hard could it be? What shifter should I buy? What do you all think?

You could probably keep the shifter you have and just add a trailer button somewhere near the shifter for a lot less than 100 bucks.

The trim limiter switch basically is just two different wires that lead to the 'up' side of the trim motor. One runs through the limiter switch, one doesn't. When whoever installed your shifter installed it, they just used the one that doesn't run through the limiter switch. This one is attached to the trailer button on a shifter equipped with one.

So there is probably a unattached wire in the vicinity of the shifter, you just connect that one to the switch in the handle, then connect a suitable to your boat's decor button or switch to raise the outdrive all the way. One side of the switch (or button) will connect to the wire you removed from the shifter switch, and the other side will connect to a constant 12V source (you could probably tap the current 12V source that feeds the shifter's switch.)

To repeat that with perhaps more clarity, you currently have the trailer wire connected to the up button of your trim switch. You will remove this wire and connect it to a button or switch with 12V on the other terminal. Then, find your unattached trim up wire and attach it to the trim up switch on your shifter where you removed the trailer wire.

Does it bother you that much? I don't know that Ive ever driven a boat that had the auto trailer thing installed and/or working. Sometimes I trim my motor so the prop is damn near out of the water when I have to park in in a real shallow approach on a rocky bottom. I know I couldnt do that if I had a trim stop.

I hear what your sayin'. I just am used to it being set up with the deprecate switch. Also I am just a little anal.
I appreciate all the feedback sofar. I think I will just get a shifter I like (old one is nasty and faded anyway) and replace it myself. I tell you, the shifter I liked was the one on my diplomat. It had a quicksilver with a black tee handle and separate trim and trailer switches. I don't think they make that one anymore but incase someone out there have a nice clean one I be interested.......rich

Sure you could. You just press the trailer button instead of the trim button.

I know very little about the Merc control, but I agree with Keith on this one. I found a great price for a brand new concealed control for my
Johnson outboard on Ebay. Like you, I am anal about having everything right where I can. Sometimes you have to make a change when parts are no longer available and I like it when the replacement parts are an improved version.
