27p trophy or 28p trophy, that is the question

Ray Zuelke

Tried out a 27p, small hub trophy last week end. Great results :thumb: 76.9 gps, 2 in boat (2100 pulsare, 250 pro xs, 10" cmc hyd. jack, 3" below pad) 5800 - 5900 rpm. Chine walk not a problem - was a limiting factor with Tempest. Trophy also gave great mid range accleration. Blew out a lot on hole shot, however it had a medium to large vent plugs and no ring.

I "think" - dangerous:eyecrazy: - I want to order a 28P, small hub trophy, have Merc lab the thing, feel I would get even better results. May loose a couple of rpm going up in pitch, gain back that or more rpm because of the lab work.

Goals: Top end, limit amount of chine walk to manageable value, mid range acceleration, cruising - not skiing ( have a 23P high-five for that)

Any input would be very appreciated.

Save your money! I have a 27" Trophy Plus that I had lab finished and didn't gain a thing. If you can hang on for a while, Turning Point will have there 27" 4 blade ready soon. Not only will it out run the 27" Trophy, but with less chine walk and for less money. Go back in "Play To Win" and find the thread "Long awaited new product" and read the report that Wildman gave on the 25". They are awsome! boatman

Ray ,

If you drop your jackplate and trim in you shouldn't get much of any blowout. I can trim my motor in to about 1/4 on the gauge and if I drop my jackplate all the way down(probably about 6 1/2" below pad) my Pulsare will take off like no tomorrow. This is great for holeshot especially if pulling skiers or tubers. (bow lift is minimal)

I think you could go higher than 3" below pad. You should get that number close to 2". Do you have any more room to go up ? Jackplate holes or bracket holes ? Keep an eye on water pressure and temps. Chris and I are running more setback but we're up to around 1 1/2" below pad. What's the rev limit on the 250xs ? Isn't it higher ?(6000+) If it's higher, I'd prop down to get yourself closer to limit when running WOT.

Good Luck keep us posted !:bigthumb:

Paul,

Can lift to 2" below. However, rpm's go up while speed does not increase proportionatly.

Trophy ran better @ 3" vs. 2". Measurements are somewhat of a estimate, I will calibrate more exact when the boat is on the trailer this weekend. Estimates are based on data taken while on lift.

I felt having Merc work the prop would give me 100 - 200 rpm. over the 5800-5900. Your right, 6,000 rpm max WOT with rev limiter at about 6200. The manual informs that over 6,000 the ecu kicks in extra oil injection. Goes on to inform some loss of fuel economy, increased immesions with potential loss of power.

I spoke with the head Tec guy @ Merc. - propellers. VERY knowledgeable. He suggested I stay with the 27p, said 28p are not the same prop - do not drive as well. He suggests having it worked, but not to the extreme (200 rpm) because of my concern on reduced prop life, especially @ Shawano - shallow, often cutting a little sand. He feels he could get 100 rpm with moderate modification. I feel comfortable with his recomendations. Consequently, I am close to pulling the trigger on a 27p Trophy Plus, small hub.

On the other hand - note Boatman's input on the new Turning Point Prop's. Wildman backs up. Also very interesting. I'll see what information comes back on the new 27p.

79.2 M.P.H.

Paul got this on the river today,by himself with a full tank of fuel.I guess he's running pretty good,eh!I'm suprised he's even able to blog with the rest of us lowlifes after speeds like that.Maybe i can turn my boat into a tug with a 15p high five. The rest of us will continue to talk though,K.
Tug(alias Bluehealer)

Today was a good day for water conditions. Some light chop on the river hull really felt free. Very little chine walk with the chop. It was pretty warm and humid. It would have been better if it was cooler. I'd like to get on the river with about a 1/4 tank of fuel, a little chop and 65-70 temps. Hey ! That's what the weekend looks like !!!

I'm turning a Trophy Plus 25 @ 6200 rpms. New ECU's are really opening up !

Boatman,

What would you recommend for a TurningPoint prop ? Do you have any pics of these props ? How did they run for speeds and rpms compared to the Trophy Plus props ? I need another mph BEFORE bluehealer gets there !!!

If you're experiencing rpm increase and loss of speed your correct with dropping drive. I wonder if you could use more setback ? Extra setback would allow you to run drive higher.(less drive in the water the better) As long as you can maintain good pressure/temps. Bluehealer/tripod/Tug is running 18" of setback. I'm running 13 1/2".

I hope Boatman gets some more info on the TurningPoint props. I'm always interested in trying new products. Especially, if it keeps me ahead bluehealer ! We have a good friendship ! We even swap once in awhile....................boat parts that is !!!

Paul,

I have good water pressure. Merc comes stock with low water pick ups in the front of the topedo - work great.

More setback. Yes, very interested in adding during the winter. I am @ 10" back now. Would 2" - 12" total make much difference? There was a tread were 14" seemed perfect. Who is the mfg., web site, for solid mount. I did not get a good look at your & Chris's rigging. Paul said he has some 2" spacers to sell. I want to talk with him about that - however don't know if that is the way to go.

Also, what about the strain on the transom? Must not be a issue or you wouldn't be rigging the way you are.

I am taking everything out of the water this weekend. Man,I really hate to have that happen this year.

Z
