300X or 300 Pro-Max for my future 2100 Pulsair BR?

Any thoughts on differences I could expect between rigging a 2100 Pulsair bow rider with either a 300X or a 300 Pro-Max??? Any fellow forum members know of one set-up this way already?? Looking for feedback between motor differences and what kind of performance I could expect yet pull the kids skiing when needed?

I can't break 85 with my Pulsare and 300 Pro Max, although I don't think I've found the perfect prop yet. I would guess that the 300x would run another 4-5 mph faster on my boat due to more hp and higher rpms capability.

I would not anticipate any problems pulling a skier with either motor.

Craig, is yours a open or closed bow? What set-back, rigging, etc. do you have? Any issues with that motor & hull combo I should know about? I would love to see some photos if you have any email to jrumon@yahoo.com. Thanks, Jim.

SCT on this board is building a 2100 BR with a 300X, and he's starting with a 10" RapidJack (just like I had on mine

Checkmates owned: 1995 Pulsare 2100BR/1995 Mercury Promax 225 2.5 EFI. 1995 Persuader 183/4.3 LX V6. 1992 Pulse 171/1992 Mercury XR6 150 hp 2.5 liter.

jrumon,
Mine is a closed deck with 8" setback. Could use maybe a few inches more setback, but it runs pretty good trim-wise where it's at. Best props for me so far have been the 28 Trophy Plus and 29 Tempest plus. (The 29 Tempest has poor hole shot, and I rarely use it. It was balanced and worked for top end by previous owner who had a lighter hull). I run the Sportmaster case with 1.75 gears.

You really have nothing to worry about as far as the hull/transom handling the motor. It's still less weight than a V6 OMC. My insurance company is not concerned about the hp of the motor. Since it is over 20', they are indifferent. You may have some issues as far as your local DNR/Sherriff. I haven't been questioned yet, even though my cap plate is 250 hp. Mine is a 2000, I've heard the new models have a 300 plate. Kip from Checkmate is working on getting me a new plate. I think the reason many are stamped 250 is because that was about the biggest motor available until recently. 300's were around, but not very popular.

Why not consider the new Yamaha 300 hp hpdi? I understand its cheaper than the hi-end Mercury outboards and if the reliability is anything like the big Yamaha outboard I used to run, you'll almost never be in the shop. Also, I believe the colours are now black and red, which would be as good on the white, red and black pulsair as the merc. I've never seen much mention of Yamahas on the board so maybe I'll just sit back and get slammed.

Craig, Sounds like you have a great toy. I just found a buyer for my 85MPH (on GPS) 23' Warlock offshore

(Our family- 4 kids under 9 -outgrew it's use). I'm now considering a 2100 Pulsair BR and setting it up with a 300X, Hyd. steering, a Bob's 10' hyd. fast-jack, and either a Mazco RE3 or RE4...All I have to do is convince my wife on dropping $45-50K on the new "family boat". I know the boat is strong enough for the motor and I have heard rumors that the new boats will have a 300HP rating plate...If not I will deal with it (like the old days)? My first Checkmate was a brand new 15' V-Mate-1 that I put a new 140 Merc inline 6 (with 90HP stickers of course...thanks "Sammy"). It was a fun boat considering I was only 16 when I bought it.

Any issues with your 300 motor and how's handling with that set-up???

Jy...I haven't had any experience with the Yamaha line in a "performance" app...It seams they are very reliable but lack getting the Rev's the Merc's get. My buddy has a bass-boat that Yammi 150 V-Max TCRP with the 15" mid and twin counter rotating stainless props...That thing is killer for a 150 and has a killer holeshot!!! If Yamaha got smart, they'd offer a bigger power head with that set-up...I'd love to try it. I didn't know they were making a 300... You said is is black and red, is it a V-Max series??? HPDI system??? Any idea of price??? Any other info on this new 300 Yam??? I would hate to drop $15-20K on a motor and not be "happy" with the performance...a Merc 300 Pro-Max or 300X is a sure-thing!

JW...sure wish I could have made it over last summer to do some proping on your boat! My Warock just sold and now it's time to start shopping again (finally)...You sold yours too soon!!!

That Pro-max set-up would have probably been just fine to satisfy my speed cravings, but I always want more! If I just leap into one with a 300X, I can't regret not going "bigger"...she gets her "family baot" and I get my speed fix. I'm down to one boat now (my antique 1947 Chris-Craft 22' Woody)...so the need for speed search is on! Keep me posted if you hear of anything interesting...Thanks, Jim.

Google search outboard motor failures, I believe that's where I seen some write-ups on Yamaha piston failures. I'll look into it some more tomorrow if you can't find it. From what I heard they have a problem with some of there motors running lean, at WOT.

jrumon, If your looking for info on Yamahas check out iboats or mastertech marine under the outboard motor failures search I listed in my previous search. They both have a great Q&A tech form on outboard motor problems and also have sime reviews on the new Yamahas I believe. I believe though that Master tech. had some concern about there HPDI motors failing.

Sorry, the motors that I heard of that ran lean at WOT were the first Mercs that came out with hi pressure direct injection, which I heard has since been fixed. But I did read that they do not have all the bugs out of the new Yamahas. Some people wrote in that they had to have two or three power heads replaced while still under warranty. I'm by know means a Tech Expert but wanted to add what I heard. Hope it helps.

I am one of the few YAMAHA peolpe here, I love them, I've had four, 25hp, 150 Pro V, 175hp & 200Pro V. They have awsome torque, and will pull the R's and the speed. Mine are all carb engines, but the reliability is impecable compared to most of my freinds Merc's.
Another intresting tid bit, Yamahe & merc have the same lower unit shape and prop shaft, I run Merc props and a Merc nose cone will fit yamaha.

jrumon sounds like you've had a few Mates. Why don't you send me over a pic or two of each and I'll put them in a thread for you.

Thanks for all the input guys... I wasn't aware of any sights listing failures...I'll check it out! The Yam's are good motors, but I love my Merc's... Does anyone know EXACT differences from the 300 ProMax to the 300x??? I know the 300x is the "hot" one...just can't decide if if it's worth the extra coin! I think the 2100 Pulsair B/R would be great with either...I can see honest 80+ with the 300 ProMax, and 85+? with that 300x.....

Chris...Thanks for a great web sight!!! I would love to post some of my photos if I ever get time to dig them out...(they're still in boxes from the last move or two ago)...maybe when the snow flies and I need some "boat fix" I'll go digging. Thanks, Jim.

jrumon,

No handling issues at all. The 300 (or 300x) is the perfect motor for the Puslare. A 225 is no comparison. I went from about 75-76 mph with a 225 Promax to 84-85 mph with the 300. All kinds of torque for pulling skiers and tubing.

I assume you've investigated the price of a new Pulsare with 300x is $45-50,000. Wow, that's getting up there. I would let mine go for $32,000. My wife wants to get back into an I/O with cuddy.

Here's the info:
2000 Checkmate Pulsare with 2000 300 Merc Promax (Off shore) with Sportmaster case. Low hours on motor (50-75 hours estimate). Pristine Condition. White with red and black graphics. Set up with all the best. Hydraulic jack plate. 8” set-back. Hydraulic steering. Off shore trim unit. Full gauges. Gaffrig Speedo. Hot foot throttle. Foot control trim. Runs 85 mph on GPS. C-hawk dual axle trailer. Cockpit cover. I bought this boat new in Spring of 2000. I bought the motor "new in the crate" in Spring of 2002. Both are cleaner then the day I picked them up. Asking $32,000.

Craig...is your baot an open or closed bow? Sounds like you've got the right set-up...do you have photos posted on this sight or can you send me some??? (jrumon@yahoo.com). I noticed your in Debuque, Ia...The last time I was there was for "Thunderfest" back in the 90's...saw Rob's 32' Aerotech cat run 130+MPH in kilo's...impressive for a barge! Nice area to boat...do they still do any boat racing???

jrumon,
It's a closed deck. I like the looks of them the best.

I can send you some photos if your seriously interested. I thought about posting some on this site, but never did. I would have to use a scanner and scan some glossys in, I never did take digital photos.
