400hp sbc

What kind of build would u guys do on a 350 to get roughly 400hp. It's a carbed version. Just curious what cam, heads, etc you would run?

I bet you could get there relatively easy with a set of vortec heads a cam around 500 lift. I also like the small block afr heads. if you got the cnc 195s you could get closer to 500 hp pretty easily. Of course whatever cam you run make sure it will work with a marine application so you don't get water reversion. Or a mini blower on top of your current setup would probably get you there too.

My motor has 814 hours so a blower scares me on it. I just wanna get some more power to get it to where I can run a 23p prop to have some lower rpm nice cruising speeds.

I don't think I put fresh heads on a short block with that many hours. Too likely to start pulling oil past the rings. Better to start with a fresh short block too, especially how cheap a Chevy 350 or 383 can be done.

Bringin this back up but if I was gonna start with a fresh block and put a new rotating assembly. What pistons and cam and stuff should I use with stock manifolds with 3in risers? Or can I run stock rods and just put Pistons on it around he 400hp mark? Do any performance shops do build lists you can pay them for?

Hit up Kunkle's Marine in Mansfield, OH. They should have all the answers for you.

Not sure where in Ohio you are, but several on here, myself included, have used Millets engine shop in Piqua, Ohio. They are all boaters and really know their stuff. They also have a dyno on site that is very reasonably priced so you will know exactly what you are working with.

You won't see 400hp with stock manifolds. It just won't happen. I you were Starting from scratch I would go the 383 route and keep it conservative on the cam. Vortec style heads are a good mid range power head. Summit racing uses dart vortec iron eagle heads. They come with 175cc intake runners, 67cc chamber, severe duty stainless valves and comp springs. You could go with other name brand heads in 180-185 cc range but I wouldn't overdo it in the bigger is better head department. Youll end up with a lazy engine. Keep your compression at no more than 9:1. Run a marine dual pattern cam in the 220s with a 114 centerlobe. Some decent exhaust, a rpm performer intake and a 750carb will get you close to the 400hp mark with good midrange torque to cruise on.
