454 Mag Exhaust Upgrade. Which to buy???

Taz

Member
I'm looking at new exhaust manifolds (Headers) for my 454 mag. I want to spend around $1200 so I'm looking at cast aluminum risers not SS pipe. I have thru transom exhaust below the water line. S shaped 4" pipe/hose after the riser which lowers the outlet about 12".

I found 3 around $1200 not including brackets. A plus for me would be if I didn't have to move the oil filter and PS pump. Know of any???

What do you all think of these??

IMCO Thumper (CP Performance)
Kodiak (Rex Marine)
EMI Thunder (Boatexhaust.com)

Taz,
I put EMI Thunder manifolds and S.S. risers on my 1989 Senator with a 7.4 litre,330HP . They are 3/4" taller than stock manifolds and risers . Sounds like we have the same setup , under water outlets and an S pipe in the middle .Eddie Marine includes all brackets and hose adapters in their kit . Oil filter stays in the same place and there are brackets for the throttle and shift cables as well as the ignition module.Did not have to move the p/s pump, just bend the outlet pipes a tad . I moved the oil filter to the back of the block just for looks .I had to modify the bottom of the sun deck to have clearance .
See picture at "picture this",page 3, Redboats Ride .
Hope this helps,

Redboat,

I checked out your pic's. Very nice ride. Getting all the brackets included is a plus. Your set up looks like how I want mine. I have the same s pipe exhaust. What differnce did the headers make? Sound? speed? responsivness?

Taz,
Big jump in response , 500 more RPM and 4-5 mph faster . The exhaust tone changed to a more pleasing roar , not any louder .Had to rejet the carb and changed timing a couple of degrees too.

I no longer can endorse Eddie Marine . I sent back one of their S.S. risers for repair of a bad weld in Jan.,just received it back today , it looks the same as when I sent it in . They claim no leaks, just cosmetic. There is still my teflon tape in the water inlet bung, how did they test it?The least they could have done was clean it up.They had it for 2 months.

The other side looks fine.

Hey Taz did you ever get a set. I just got a pursuader 235 wit the 454 mag and was thinking of putting on headers as my first mod. Alsohave you had it out yet this year, I am just wondering if you have a top gps speed so i can know what i expect.

Lightning headers are great!Good prices and very durable,I have a friend with 6 seasons on his and they are still like new.
