I have an oil temp guage on my boat. Synthetic oil does run cooler. I started out with conventional oil and switched to synthetic. I run Gastrol Syntech 30 in my 400 S/B

Here ya go Kurt:

ENG: 0D618131 4502110ES 1992 MERCRUISER 502 BRAVO
DRV: 0D634081 5120150ES 1992 MERCRUISER BRAVO 1 1.50:1
TRN: 0D592812 6020000DS 1991 MERCRUISER BRAVO TRANSOM

Second number is the actual model number.

Sold to a guy in Virginia, Warranty expired May 24, 1992. No recalls or bulletins outstanding and no warranty repairs were ever done. Nothing exciting - but that's a good thing. As far as the manuals go - let me have a look at home tonite - it sort of looks like it may be avaiable on line, but i don't have high speed at work and it took too long to load. I'll get back to you on that tonite.

Chris,

I am not 100% positive that the 3.1 motor broke due to synthetic oil. I just know what I saw when I dissassemled it. Everyone has their own opinion on synthetics. Mine is not based on scientific fact, just on my experiences. I have been doing this for a loooooong time. I have never seen a motor fail due to petroleum based oil. I have seen them fail because of lack of maitenance, regardless of petroleum or synthetic oil. In my opinion, synthetics are not worth the extra $$ in every day applications. Sure the lower oil temps may be nice under certain conditions, but I have not seen a few extra degrees of oil temp ever kill a motor. I am not saying they will harm anything, when used from the start of an engine life.
For myself, I just dont see any real solid benefits unless you are racing.

Thanks alot Chris, nice to know nothing major was done ever.Is the Seawater pump your refering to the water pump on the Starboard side?

Yup, down low in the bilge, driven with a belt off the crankshaft. I'm working on your service manual as we speak. i just downloaded a 320meg file off mercnet now i have to figure out what the h&!! it is.

Ok, figured it out. I now have your service manual downloaded on my computer. File size is 320MB. I don't think i can email this thing to you. I'll try but i think that file size is 2 large. If that doesn't work. I can probably burn it and mail it to you. Give me your email address and i'll give it a shot.

Stupid me, I might as well download the sterndrive as well. I'm sure it will be about the same size. They probably have a parts manual to. I'll check in, in an hour or so.

320MB attached file?? Holy crap, there is no way you can email that. Burn it and send it snail mail. One way you could send it is through a file sharing program.

That's what i thought, but what the hay - i'll give it a shot - what's the worst that can happen - i'll crash the whole internet and bring world commerce to a grinding halt

If it happens you know who caused it

By the way Kurt - you have mail!!

Kurt

Your very lucky tonite, my daughter would not go to bed (she's 14 months old and cutting molars) so instead of studying like i'm supposed to be doing Sarah and i downloaded pictures for you (you can never start them too young!!)

I sent parts images and part numbers to your email address on the site, for the engine. I'll work on the drive when i get a chance, but it will take a while, unless my wife goes out for the night again and Sarah decides not to sleep.

It appears that this stuff is just being uploaded on mercs end - the brovo drive manual only had 4 pages. Maybe in a month or so there will be more available. I'll check in time to time and see.

Chris,Thank You,Thank You!Cant tell you how much its appreciated!I know all to well the "up with kids"have four boys myself, ranging from 15 years old down to 5 years. They are ALOT of work, but there my boatin buds! They helped SMOOTH things over when I pulled up with the new boat.My wife isnt to thrilled, she wanted a new park model trailer at our lot in Ludington.Well, needless to say,we have a 1976 5th wheel and a new boat!Doesnt the boat sound like more fun than some new trailer?I think so,and so do my boys, that my friend is democracy in action, you are outvoted Mom!
