6.5" vs. 6 x 9" - which is best

Yeah yeah Curt - not the first time I've heard that! I'll check out those pioneers - wonder if I can get them with a white grill?

I have (10) 6.5 polk db651 in my 242 and 2 JL audio 10w3 subs. Its loud and very clear.

6.5 is the way to go, you can install them with a 5" hole saw and they don't need boxs just a flat mounting surface. If you do go with boxs I take them to lineX truck bed coating and have them sprayed then there water proof.

You will have to dismiss laws of audio that apply to car and home setups. Marine situations have to overcome lack of cabin pressure (see bass in a car) and multiple resonate frequences that you wont have to deal with as much at home. If your on a budget then you need to think displacement. A 6x9 will have more potential than a 6.5 for giving you volume. Enclosing the speaker in a "box" is very important. DO NOT USE MDF! Marine grade birch ply works well. I have done many small and elaborate boat stereo systems over the last 10 yrs (professionally) and would be happy to add my $.02 if anyone is interested.
