82 20' enchanter /LOOKING TO HIT 70MPH

I JUST BOUGHT THIS BOAT LAST YEAR. AND FELL IN LOVE WITH IT . SMOOTH RIDING, ROOMY, AND RAN 62MPH ON GPS. WHICH I THOUGHT THAT WAS GOOD CONSIDERING THE WEIGHT OF THE BOAT.AND THAT IT HAD A 200HP MERCURY ON THE BACK FROM 82' WHICH WAS RATED AT THE CRANK COMPAIRED TO THE WAY THEY RATE THEM NOW .( AT THE PROP) OVER THE WINTER I STARTED TO TAKE HER APART TO UP DATE HER. THE CLEAR COAT WAS SUN FADED , THE SEATS WERE DAMAGED AND OF COARSE THE 20+ YEAR OLD MOTOR THAT HAD NEVER BEEN REBUILT.NEDLESS TO SAY I HAVE BOUGHT SOME NEW TOYS OF THE BOAT LIKE A 1990 200HP MERCURY WITH A LIGHT WEIGHT FLYWHEEL , AND A LOW WATER PICKUP - LOWER UNIT . TO GO ALONG WITH THE NEW POWER PLANT I HAVE PURCHASED A CMC HYD. JACK PLATE THAT HAS A 5.5 INCH SET BACK. I AM GOING TO SET IT BACK
AN ADDIONAL 4 INCHES. THERE IS GOING TO BE SOME MOTOR WORK DONE AS WELL , BUT I NEED SOME OTHER IDEAS AS WELL . SO IF THERE IS ANY ONE OUT THERE THAT HAS AN IDEA PLEASE WRIGHT BACK.

CHECKMATE 82, MAKE SURE YOU KEEP THE OLD STOCK GEARCASE FROM YOUR OTHER MOTOR TO SWAP OUT THE NOSE-CONED LOWER UNIT OF THIS MOTOR. MOST OF THE TIME A STOCK LOWER UNIT IS FASTER ON A HEAVY BOAT THAN THE CONED CASES. I'M SURE JW AND BILL WILL AGREE WITH ME. WITH BOAT CASES TO TRY, YOU'LL FIND OUT WHICH ONE IS BEST!!

I HAVE HEARD THAT IT WOULD SLOW ME DOWN . I TOOK THE OLD LOWER UNIT OUT AT THE END OF LAST YEAR. THATS ANOTHER RESON I BOUGHT THE NEWER MOTOR. IF IT DOES I KNOW ENOUGH GUYS THAT WOULD KILL TO HAVE THIS LOWER UNIT. I WAS JUST WORRIED THAT I WAS GOING TO RAISE HER TO HIGH AND BURN HER UP. LAST YEAR WITH NO JACK PLATE I GLASSED OVER THE TO THREE HOLES BECAUSE I WAS TRIMING HER SO HIGH. BUT I HAD TO TO GET HER TO START TO SLIP , WHICH IN TURN GAVE ME A 2 MPH GAIN.

I WOULD SEND BACK THE NOSE CONE IF YOU CAN, YOU WILL NEED TO BE RUNNING AT LEAST 83-83 ON GPS TO GET ANY PERFORMANCE GAINS. OTHERWISE, IT WILL SLOW YOU DOWN A COUPLE OF MILES PER HOUR

IT COMES WITH THE MOTOR . BUT IT WOULD NOT BE THAT HARD TO CHANGE IT . IT SEEMS LIKE IT WOULD HELP . YOU GUYS KNOW BETTER THAN I DO LIKE I SAID I AM NEW TO THIS. THE BOAT I HAD BEFOR WAS A 4CYL IMPERIAL AND I WAS HAPPY WITH IT UNTILL A FREIND TOLD ME ABOUT THIS BOAT FOR SALE FOR 2500.00 . WHEN I SEEN THE CHEK IN PERSON I HAD TO HAVE IT . DID I MENTION THAT IT CAME WITH A NEW 26P CHOPPER.

I had a 80'Enchanter as my last boat (pic of it on the picture this column) and loved it for 14 years. It ran 70 with a 200 2.4 Merc. Best setup for flying it would be 10-12" of setback with the newer 2.5 motor you have. I used to run a 26 Chopper as well. You should see 68-72 with this setback. With the Chopper, you can raise the engine higher than with a thru-hub prop, but the steering torque is tough. I used to like trying to hold onto her though! I put a Land & Sea nosecone on the lower unit, and I gained top speed, since I was using the chopper and surfacing it. If you want more all around performance, you could go with a stock case and a thru hub. The chopper wasn't great with holeshot. Have fun!

I'm at 70 gps with my Promax and no bow cover. I just bought a 10" setback to replace my stock 5.5", can't wait to get it. Now I need to write back to checkmate for a custom bow-cover

I have a tendency to reread my Bass & Walleye,
Hot Boat etc.. mags on a daily basis, and I found a response to a reader question last night where JTjr. said the 95' ProMax's were the hotest engines produced. I've also talked with Randy Pierson of GPI and he has said these
engines routinely hit 230-240hp on dyno out of the box. Just thought I'd toss that in for you JW! Sounds like a bob's jack your getting? Hope it gives you what your looking for. How's the boat search going ZO6?
I did a NADA search on my vehicles: both auto's are worth 6K together, while my boat is worth 15K. Do I have a priority problem or what??

I put a bow cover on my pulse 185 and gained an honest 3mph. I went to a local canvas shop for mine and it was installed with snaps on the boat for considerably less money than factory and the snaps were a perfect fit. It took them only 1 day! Good luck, C-mate 280

Checkmark, right now I am looking for a more affordable Checkmate. I just purchased a new car and will receive it tomorrow, and my Impala SS will be here next fall. Thats totalling around 80K worth this year and a boat doesn't really fit into here. If I find the perfect boat at a perfect price, I won't let it up.

As for JW, do you have a bow cover? I'll e-mail my buddy and see what his speed differences were... I'd say a good MPH.
