Yep, they get powdery, brittle and start to break down, so it's definitely a good idea to change them. Sounds like you're making great progress.:thumb: Jim

So yesterday while I was out she did something different again. She defiantly runs better then before I cleaned the carbs but now, every once and a while, and almost every hole shot, she will start off even stronger. Like she wants to snap my neck. Then about half way through the hole shot she bogs down to what she was running on Saturday. I makes me think this motor has more to offer. Today I'm gonna replace fuel lines and the fuel line from the take to the motor. The filter, and check the pick up in side the tank. My thoughts are she's being starved for fuel. During the hole shot, right when she starts to bog the bulb goes pretty limp. Any thoughts?
 
Those all sound good to check. You might also check your fuel pump on the motor. Follow the fuel line up to the side of the motor and should circular with the cover held on with (4) screws. Based on my old 135 Evinrude which may not apply to a newer motor like yours. It should have a filter screen and a diaphragm inside. Check to make sure they look good. Jim

Those pieces that look like earwig carcasses could very well be deteriorated fuel line particles, I've seen it myself. When the fuel hoses deteriorate from the inside, the inside lining of the fuel hoses come apart and thats the result. I would recommend that you replace the fuel hose from the tank to the engine as well, they do go bad over time with ethanol fuels.

I started by taking the fuel filter off and instantly I knew there was a problem. The back pressure in the line spewed this on my hand. imagejpg2_zps8f0d3eef.jpg

I took the supply line and gave the bulb a few pumps into a rag.

So far I have the supply line from the tank to the pump replaced and the individual lines to the carbs replaced. Just a few more claps to tighten and she's good to go.
I would love to take her for a water test but I now have a short some where with my trailer lights! :brickwall:

So I've been a member of the forum for a while and just recently picked up my first checkmate!!

It has less then 200 hours on it and it shows. The interior in next to perfect, and there is only minor oxidization in the gel coat. imagejpg1_zpsb822f6a8.jpg
Oh and ya. It came with the original owners manual! It's a one owner boat that was custom ordered.
The motor is a 89 evinrude 200xp. The motor, even though the years are different is original as well. It being 25 years old with few hours has brought its own set of complications. For a 200 it seems to bog quite a bit at lower rpms. I've been putting sea foam in the gas hoping that would help. Every once and a while she seems to get it together, but progress is slow.
So far I've spent a few hours buffing out the oxidization, but will wait until winter sets in and boating is outta the picture. I plan to remove all the metal and buff with 3m compound and 3m finesse it II. So far that's worked to remove the oxidization. Thankfully, it looks like I won't be wet sanding!! :)

Love the color of this exciter. I just bought a beautiful one but I'm a little jealous of yours. Mine is just so plain compared to this and other i have seen.
 
Good find. Maybe an extra inline fuel filter for good measure might not be a bad idea. Jim

Hey Jim. Ya I forgot to mention it but I did change that as well. I started it in my drive way today to see how she ran. At idle it's still ruff. The motor shakes a lot and can't maintain a constant rpm. She keeps bogging, runs smooth for a second then bogs. I pulled the spark plugs, all the spark plugs looked clean and dampish, except one. It was dry black. I redid the compression test and they were lower then the original compression test I did before I bought it. Ordinal results were 90psi on the one side and 95psi +/- one or two on the other. Today they were pretty much all 85psi +\- one or two.
Also, what I think is the old oil injection line is leaking gas where it is plugged off. Here is a link to the video of that.

There was a carb that was smoking quite a bit when I turned it off as well. Is that normal?

Thanks to every one for there help so far. There is no way I would have ever tacked this motor with out the support and knowledge of the people of this forum!
 
Thanks wildman. I love the 80 aggressive styling. But I'd take your motor anyday!

Ive always been a merc fan but I would be willing to take that evinrude for your color scheme. I can always replace it later...cant really do those colors easily later. Wish I could help ya with your engine issues. Im sure these guys here will get ya sorted out.

So clearly the VRO line is supposed to be plugged into the motor.
But that begs the question. Why is it pouring gas into the cylinder? I followed the line and it goes into the block right behind the carbs. There are the same lines coming out right beside each carb and they all go come down to two lines that lead to this..

The second picture you can see there is a fuel line attached to it as well as what I think are the VRO lines. No other lines go to this "thing". The VRO system has been disconnected. Has it not been done properly? Is this maybe the root of my issues with this motor?
