97 242 poor hole-shot

convincor97

New member
Heres what I have,1997 242convincor,385hp,23 pitch mirage-plus,tabs.
this set up is fine for 1 or 2 people in boat, turns 5100 rpm @ 69-70 gps
this thing has great bow lift, people see it think all that is in the water is the prop.
with heavy loads, 5 to 7 people, it is very slow to plane, but will still turn 5100 rpms
I do not want to go to a lower pitch and loose top end.
so can anything be done to help hole-shot and loose top-end

thanks

A set of K planes would help if you don't already have them.

1975 Checkmate Tri-mate 2, 2.4 200+ / Sky jacker 6" plate / 25p Laser 2 prop, Currently the boat is undergoing overhaul.

As was said above, you can't have the best of both worlds.
As with anything else that is dual purpose, prop selection is always a compromise. You can't have a great hole shot prop that will also deliver blistering top end speeds. However, I would try a 4 blade Bravo 1 or Hydromotive. Maybe you can find someone local to you that would let you try one before buying.
What motor are you running? Is it the factory Mercruiser 454 Magnum, 385 h.p.?

Yes its stock merc 454mag 385.
last year I tryed a 4 blade bravo,hole-shot was little better, but no bow lift, lost 5 mph.
also I am on a very rough lake in GA. am out of the water as much as in. The 4 blade grabs so well I blowed the out drive jumping a 4 ft. wave

convincor97,

I am Thomas and I work for Bennett Marine in the Client Service Department.

You state you have trim tabs, but your hole shot with a heavy load is a bit poor. Please tell me the size of the trim tabs you currently have installed, so I will have a better idea about your situation.

I look forward to your reply.

Sincerely,
MJ Thomas

convincor97,

you could always try giving Mike Combs a call. I'm sure he can tell you approximately what top speed you can expect from a variety of props.

I'd try getting your hands on some diffrent 4 blade props, I think if you find the right one you can come "close" to the best of both worlds. I'v had good luck with both outboards and stern drives, just have to find the right one.

Thanks Chris,F150GT.
I thought maybe I could find someone with the same set-up so we could compare notes. My last experiment cost me $665 and the prop did not work well. I've had this prop reworked once,I'am thinking thats the way to go if I can find the right person to do it. Got to many BAJAs right on my tail here to give-up any SPEED
Can't have that.
Thanks

convincor97,

Please check your installation and insure it is per our online installation instructions for the ST16 Sport Tabs system (http://www.bennetttrimtabs.com/stinstall.htm). Also, can you provide me with some photos &/or drawings of your transom (w/measurements), so I will have a better idea of your Available Mounting Area (determined by starting 3-4" from the chine and measuring to within 8" of the outdrive)? If so, please direct them to my email address below.

I look forward to your findings!

Sincerely,
MJ Thomas

convincer 97.
I have a 96 253 convincer with a 454 mag efi 385hp. I ran a hydromotive q-4 (4 blade) in 24 pitch. I tried many 3 blade props, but liked the q-4 the best for handeling reasons, also none of the 3 blades were any faster. With the hydromotive you need to trim out farther because they lift the stern. I now run a 27 hydro because I have installed a pro-charger. I would sell you the 24. Its in mint condition! I paid $569.00 for it. I would sell it to you for $350.00
