99 Mercury Optimax Questions

Hey guys,

Recently purchased an 88 Starflite rigged with a 99 Merc Opti and had a couple of questions about it. I know my black max 150 like the back of my hand but these newer motors are a completely new adventure.

1. When I first start it up after backing in the water the alarm continues to beep. The previous owner didn't know at all why it was doing that. I've found if I shut it down and restart it stops.

2. How sensitive are these motors to water pressure? When I test drove I was running the chopper that came on it and it seemed like I could raise the motor up pretty high. Yesterday was out running with my hi five and I couldn't raise the motor up very high at all before the alarm would go off. Seems like at speed it wants 11 to 15 psi of water pressure. I realize the hi five is a stern lifting prop which wasn't helping matters.

Lastly, is there anything in particular I need to be on the lookout for? What little reading I've done, these motors seem to be pretty good. I know they had trouble with them in 2001 or so. It sure is quiet and much more efficient compared to my old 2.0 black max, lots of running yesterday and only a quarter tank of fuel.

Thanks for any input.
