Barn Roof fell on my Starliner!!!

Thanks Guys,

I'm up in the air with the interior. I have a few options: Order a new interior from checkmate for $1200 or so and install myself over the winter. But the whole rear of the boat has a total of 5 tears / punctures, all smaller than 1/4". If the VLP works well there, I may just tackle the bow area.

There is only one hard to do repair on the big bow are backrest - I think an upholstery shop could replace small torn vinyl panel. The rest of the damage is on the 3 forward-most little back pads. They seem pretty easy to re-cover myself: just the piping and long buttons and stainless staples.

I'm probably going to order a few yards of matching vinyl and might play with doing the simple backrests myself. If they turn out good then I may just leave like that. If not, I can order the new factory vinyl and maybe even have an upholstery shop do it.

The main thing is that I'll be boating soon!! I'm still debating a jackplate, there are a few deals out there right now...

- Anthony

Yeah, just use 'er and worry about the rest next winter...when it's all safe and sound in a brand new heated garage you built with steel I-Beams or 12" centered 2x6 construction :D

On that topic, they rebuilt the barn - basically the same way! Twice as many trusses and a bit steeper pitch, so it should hold up. Same 10' door my buddy's pontoon trailer barely fits through... amazing.

Kevin called me on Friday and said he needed the weekend - I had originally told him I'd come on Monday, so I can't be real upset. I've got a fair bit of stuff to do tuesday - thursday nights before hitting grand lake over the holiday weekend...

Yikes! Well, guess you'll be storing your boat elsewhere this winter? ;) Mine just came out yesterday, fired 'er up and got a bit of tweeking done. It's off to Lakeside Marine here in Pa. for some drive work, so sadly i'll miss the holiday weekend :shakehead:. All's good though, she'll be just ducky for the summer!

She's home....

Safe and sound in the driveway under the new (sweet) custom cover. The windshield looks great - silver and a little retro-looking. I'd say it's just tall enough for a little guy like me to duck down and see through if I need to for high speed runs. Short enough for even a little guy to see over. It's a similar angle as the orig, but a few inches taller. It does come back in your face a tad more than I'd like, but not intrusive. Nice compromise that keeps the orig. look with a little more wind-block.

Gel coat work was real good - at the right angle you can see the the different color, but you really have to look close. Kevin also removed the clearcoat (previous owner's handy work) from the swim platforms and cooler cover area. He buffed the whole boat out - looks great.

I can't believe I posted this without pics, but it's dark!! Pics will go up tomorrow.

hey anthony, reallllly glad to hear everything turned out well for you. i cant wait to see the pictures. im in the midst of redoing the floor, knee supports, and stringer in the sportfire. that soft spot near the back was a bit worse than both of us thought. she had a little bit of core rot in a few spots. and the stringer was rotted so bad that it wasnt even attached to the boat. im actually really excited to do the project. i have a feeling the boat will handle alot better in rough water now considering the floor wasnt fully attached to the boat before. i think im going to modify the stringer layout and put a nice teak ski locker in between my seats like your boat has as well. goodluck with your boat let me know how your first run goes. ill keep checking back for updated pics.

Sigh.... still waiting on the pics dude!! :shakehead::bounce:

Pic's posted

Glad you guys are still following this saga!

Here they are, only 6 months of waiting, worrying, etc...

Overall, it turned out really well. The windshield works perfect for me, I can actually look through it when I'm running fast. I like the look, not stock and from some angles, you can tell that the lines don't match up. But overall, I like it (I also had no other choice!). I think the silver stands out nicely.

The boat ran nicely - no new creaks or anything. I'll do the vinyl and carpet eventually, but it's fine for now.

This is the whole album, the recent ones are at the end. Last pic is my wife and the bro-in-law with all of the kids. There is one of a cover I'm selling and also some of the original starliner windshields that I'll be putting up for sale.

On another topic, Cody - very sorry to hear about the rot, I honestly had no idea it was anything beyond that spot at the floor. Sounds like a good project though - I'll be waiting to hear how it turns out!

so I'll be derned.... I come to find Cody lives maybe 20 minutes from me in Pa and we boat even closer together when we are in Delaware. My 202 Persuader came from MI as did Codys sportfire. And anthony, wasn't your Starliner from out east?? Small world! Hey, your rig looks nice!! The windshield will take a bit getting used to but if it were mine, I'd throw some nice tinting on it. That was the first mod i did to my 234 :bigthumb:

Thanks Winter, My ice-liner actually came from waaay out west -Minneapolis. But it's funny you'll be boating with my old boat and Cody. My Dad still mentions what "nice and polite boys" Cody and his buddy's were when they picked up that boat. Somehow this site attracts nice people.

Speakin of which, I met up with Nick down on lake st. mary. He has a fast 18' pulse. He pulled the nose of that thing up about 7' on a holeshot. You should have seen the little ones in my bow clapping for it (maybe me a little too...).

I'll hold off on the tint for a while, I like the retro - chrome look to it. I also really like being able to drive under it when I'm going fast. I may tint it at some point, but I have bigger things to tackle first.

Good deal! Ahhh, i forget which way you traveled for that boat. Welp, still holding my breath on what the problem is with my outdrive, hopefully will hear something this week. I'm really anxious to get out on the water!

I wonder how hard an outdrive is to work on yourself. I have a trans buddy who does his own work on outdrives, but he's pretty knowledgeable about all types of stuff.

Good luck with your outdrive!

Hey Funboat- When you say you have a "trans buddy".........could you be a little clearer. And when you say "outdrives"...you're talking about boats, right?

Ha Ha -- Yeah, I guess that could be interpreted a few ways... I have a friend who owns an automotive transmission repair facility. He and I are both married (to women, not each other) - although I did kinda enjoy dressing up as a women at a pretty wild Halloween party that one year... I digress and am not helping my case here.

Yeah, outdrive - as in gimbal bearing and all of that other stuff the poor I/O guys have to deal with! Nice to see someone is even further in the gutter than I am!!

Yikes, i'm not sure which i'm more disturbed at... Anthony saying that, or me reading it and not catching it for a witty response! :shakehead:

Outdrives aren't very complicated, it's just that for how little i use my boats and the fact that they should last a long time, i have no gumption to learn how to rebuild one.

OK, so to get back to boats...

I recovered most of the torn up vinyl. My dad and uncle were in to visit and I used them as sweat-shop-staple-pulling-labor. Anyhow, $67 in marine vinyl. $20 in SS staples and a few beers for the staple pullers and it looks pretty darn good.

Cool thing is that most of the side panels were already starting to get crusty before the barn fell... I still have one big tear to deal with, but I'll do a vinyl patch for the summer and then shell out $50 for an upholstery shop to sew in one new panel over the winter.

Check out the last few pics on here - nothing too thrilling, but the back-rests look new with no holes!!
