Bendix problem

Need some advise - I must be overlooking something!!
Hit start Starter turns but Bendix Gear not engaging! Battery full
Charged a week ago---what am I missing???

I got ballistic---engine never a problem - main disco switch was off
But some how with negitive ground wire for Guages that was not
Wired through switch somehow back fed a small amount of voltage
So she I went to fire her up the starter turned - switch on ok!
Also my fuel guage is not working-- Hate working under the dash!!
