Boating in Unknown Lakes / Areas

I'm looking to expand our boating to some new areas. Hopefully Traverse City and possibly Mackinaw this summer. I'm just wondering what is the best way to get "boating guidlines" for any new area we may choose to explore?

I'm primarily interested in finding out where no wake zones are / speed limits / shallow areas. Local launch ramps, possibly marinas.

I don't want to be "that tourist" blasting through a poorly marked slow zone and getting to meet the local lake law enforcement officer. ( Or worse yet, finding the bottom or a rock in an area that "looked ok".

You should check out the chain of lakes in Cheboygan. Burt lake, Mullet Lake, crooked river and the Indian River. It would take you a good weekend to explore. There are a couple locks to go through and then you can head out to Mackinac Island for the day. Not many shallow spots to worry about.
If you go to the Michigan DNR site they have depth charts to most of the inland lakes in Michigan.

Traverse City is pretty easy. West Bay is most popular and the Elmwood launch is great. You'll find lots of boaters around on weekends. We spend a lot of time up here.
