CDI electronics and general stator question

Hello all, i am going to be ordering a new stator and trigger for my inline 6 within the next few days. I have decided to go the CDI rout rather than Quicksilver mercury, Is this a wise choice? Also for the part number i need for my motor (1979 merc inline-6) there are two stators available, a 9 amp and a 16 amp. I am sure that the motor had a 9 originally; my question is will i hurt anything if i jump to the 16 amp? Will i risk frying wires with the increased current? If its a safe swap than i would love to have the extra charging amps.

Thanks

i am ordering a new rectifier as well, i have been running on a rigged up radio-shack job so i want a good marine (correct) rectifier if im droppin the cash for a stator

Hi 1979Checkmate, Recently installed CDI ignition on 2.5 liter Merc, including trigger, stator, switch boxes and coils. About 12 hours on it now and no problems. Old system was not very happy. Everything bolted in place and hooked up with no issues. Came with some good reading material too. Bought another boat with same 2.5 liter power plant, its ignition system dead too, must be a weak link in these engines. Other boat is unfortunately not a Checkmate. Unable to pronounce name:). Thanks for looking

MK, if you could get me a quote on CDI part numbers:

174-5456 Stator
134-6456 Trigger

And P.M. with the figures, i would be happy to at least consider them alongside the quotes and prices i already have.

I put a cdi stator on my 1975 inline six 150 and a cdi trigger in my distributor on my 80 hp merc . Everything works and mounted correctly

Also have had good luck with CDI stuff.

BTW - I understood that they actually make the stuff with the OEM labels? Can anyone confirm this?

CDI parts

Can't vouch that they make Merc OEM parts but know for sure they make many BRP OEM parts and in the case of the 200/ 225 mid 80's motors and the V6 Merc carb'd engines make better parts then where originally on the engines from the manufacturers
