Checkmate Senator

My father has a 1987 checkmate senator that's just too nice not to be shared with the checkmate community. It's powered by a turbocharged 355 chevy v8 with an alpha one mercruiser outdrive complete with stainless steel land and sea torque shift prop. As you can tell from the photos this boat has been kept in the garage since 1987. It currently has 234 hours total.
Enjoy

Looks like it is real clean.

I have never seen a turbo setup like that. Maybe somebody
could shed some light?

GAL DANG!!!!!!!!!!!!! THAT's a sweet old find! Talk about the epitomy ( sp?) of a sleeper ride with the single exhaust!!!!!!!!! WOW!!!! LOVE IT!!! nI have never seen a turbo on an i/o before- but love the home fab look- adds to the authenticity!!!!!!! SO KEWL! THANX for sharring!!!! For sale?

Thats an awesome boat!!!!

I kinda dig the single exhaust considering whats going on under the hatch... thats just too cool. Also that land and sea prop is pretty trick.. did some reading on those a long time ago, sounded interesting- probably works well with the turbo.

That boat is sweet!! Talk about cherry!!! (same color too lol) Although i am not a fan of the single exhuast tip, kinda weird, but the boat looks like it just rolled out of the factory!! C'mon man, how bout some more info??!! :thumb:

Thank you for the kind comments.

This boat was ordered special from Checkmate without the motor or out-drive. If you look under the depth finder and above the checkmate insignia you'll notice the checkmate special made order badge.

The engine and outdrive were both built and installed into the virgin hull. This type of turbonetics turbo required that both exhaust manifolds be directed into the turbo and then dumped into the waste gate and out the exhaust. Unfortunately, this mean "No" dual exhaust. This boat is loud at idle but the turbo tends to muffle some of the exhaust noise as the turbo starts coming on strong. However, the intake and turbo noise are fairly loud.

We run two different props, a high speed "hoss" prop and the hole-shot "torque shift" prop.

The "hoss" 26degree will propel the boat to the lower 70s in it's current form. Note, this boat pegged 78mph with this prop but with an older out-drive nose cone configuration but had to be changed due to temp issues.

The "torque shift" prop is by FAR the best prop we use. It does lack top end limiting this boat to only 65mph but more than makes up for this short coming in sheer acceleration.
From a dead stop, this combination accelerates similar to what a modern era corvette would do from 0-60 on land but achieving this on the water. These props are like gold nowadays since they are no longer made. Actually, they were like gold in the late 1980s since this one was nearly $1000 new over 20 years ago.
Check out this older link for more info on this prop.

Thanks,

MAN! that things SWEEEEEEET!!!!! I think I'd have to add a second exhaust- hard to "sell" the turbo with a single- but then...it does make it a true "sleeper"! Great vid! Thanx!
