Convert to Dual Steering....

I am thinking about converting my Merc 150 over to Dual Cable steering. I have been looking on ebay for a kit...but I can't quite figure out what I need. There are some aftermarket kits...that appear to have everything...but there are several Mercury OEM parts that say the are dual steering. These parts look like just a tube and a bracket. Do I need this OEM part, or does everything I need come in a kit. IF so, where is the best place to get this kit?

Thanks

you need the specific dual cable part from merc. as far as the cables go you can get cables anywhere - teleflex are good cables and offer a complete kit at a fair price

OK, so you mean I have to buy a complete kit...which would have cables and the helm....and the Merc OEM part...correct?

you will need to buy the following:

1. dual cable conversion kit - mercury part
2. dual cable kit, buy a complete kit (helm and cables) - it's cheaper than the individual components. you cannont convert a single helm to a dual helm.

So it has the old transom bracket? If so, I'm not sure what you can do. I've seen some homemade setups, but I don't think you can trim it all the way up. My old inline has the same bracket, so that's why I'm changing the mid and transom bracket for a newer one. That way I can use a newer bolt on dual cable steering setup.

My 78 merc 150 was converted to dual cable teleflex. It was done by "Chucker". He is no amature when it comes to wrenching, he would be able to tell you how to do it.

There you do, Chucker and The Nerd should be able to help. I know I've seen it done.

Nerd, send a picture of the brackets.

agood1, you might want to consider going hydraulic with that motor. I learned a lesson the hard way when I upgraded mine by not fully researching what it would take to do the conversion. The Teleflex NFB system I bought was selling for $339 at the time, and the Merc dual cable kit was $232. I purchased the kit from RickRacers, which ended up taking forever to get. After a month of hearing nothing, I called them. They stated that the company that manufactured the kit stopped making them, but would make one more to honor my pending order. The kit does not contain any real complex parts, if you know someone with a machine shop I'm sure they could produce the parts necessary. You could try contacting RickRacers, but I just checked the link to the kit I bought, says product not found. Seems to me, for the money, hydraulic would be the way to go. Check out the links below for a little more information. I hope this helps...Good luck.
