Delta Alarm

jcam

New member
I have a 86 Checkmate with a 175Mercury.

When I start to accelerate for a while - the Delta Alarm goes off.

I put more oil in and when I back donw on the throttle the alrm goes off.

Any ideas what it might be

Never heard it refered to as a "Delta" alram, but I'm going to assume you talking about the warning horn. If I remember right, a steady beep indicates a temp warning and a beep-beep-beep indicates a problem with the oil injection.

Do you have a temp gauge? If not, I would strongly recommend one. It sounds like it might be getting hot.

I would also recommend removing the factory oil injection and mixing your oil/fuel. Especially on an older motor. There is a plastic/neoprene (or some kind of material other than metal) drive gear on the crankshaft that drives the oil pump drive shaft. This gear is known for stripping and the net result is an inadequate amount of oil to your engine. The results are catastrophic. Don't ask me hom I know......

I don't want to negate the points made with the previous post as you could have oil injection gemlins and that can cause BIG headaches.

But...A little trouble-shooting never hurts before you start tearing apart something that may be working perfectly fine and another issue is causing the problem.

First of all is the water pump working during all of this. I'll assume that it is and that your warning buzzer is giving you a oil alarm and not an over-heating condition. But what's the tell-tale doing. A good, steady stream?

Also pull your spark plugs out. What color are they burning? They should be a nice chocolate brown. If not well then there is an oil problem. If not then there is a sensor problem that may be giving you a false reading. Check your motor's compression. Should pull even, good compression on all 6 cylinders. ( No 30 #s is not good though it's even...there's trouble and at that point it won't probably start..)

Do some simple checking and if you can't resolve it then take it to a dealer. I say this because I have virtually the same set-up as you and it works.....PERFECT.

Wait a minute...I just read " I put more oil in". Are you low on oil? Almost out of oil? The sender in the tank may be the culprit. Or maybe you are letting the tank get too low?

I guess I assumed that he added oil to the resovoir not the draw tank under the cowling which can only be low if the resovoir is empty or there is a problem drawing oil from the resovoir to the draw tank under the cowling. The way I see it you should not even be able to add oil to the draw tank on the motor....just the resovoir, which has no level sensor in it. You do ask a good question, though.

Not sure if that's your wife or girlfirend "355" but nice touch. I gotta add that to my profile. Not her but mine.....

Haha! Thanks. That's the best part of boating, isn't it?? She's the "boss". Sometimes she even lets me drive!!! We're still looking for that "boat of the month" shot to post up....

So, jcam, you gettin' this?? Which oil tank did you add oil to?

No way... That's NOT the one. The trees are kind of nice though. It was good to find a cool spot to hide from the heat for awhile that day for sure!!
