Does anybody know the purpose of this switch

It should be std. practice for all of us to where these when running fast or in rough water. I have seen many stupid videos of people not paying attention and getting tossed from the drivers seat. I know I where mine when driving fast or rough water. on a daily cruise with the family at 30mph not so much.
 
I like the nylon wrist strap the best but all my bass boats attached to the vest .In the Persuader I used a velcro wristband and due to being easier I used it more often.
