I don't think Checkmate sold alot of older I/O's most boaters on this site have O/B. Checkmate also had alot of jet boats back them but know where close to the production of O/B's

Come to think of it........don't see many NEW I/O's either! Sucks to be me tryin' to sell them huh? LOL Doesn't anybody want a new boat anymore? AAhhhhhhh......remember that new boat smell? Resin and carpet and vinyl and and and oh oh OH OHHHH................whew.....almost had a moment there!

older I/O owner

I just bought a 78 Convincer off of ebay and am going to pick it up in a couple of days. Its a small block chevy I/O. I'm totally stoked, however it has a cracked block. I have many options for the fix. Can't wait to get it home and start making it new again.

awsome mm, I have a 87 convincor that I bought at the end of last year and so far this season it has been great. I keep it at a marina at the docks and I am haveing a blast this summer, spite all the rain which in that case you can just go inside the cuddy and watch a movie on the portable dvd player. Congrats on the boat and keep us posted with pics ect. John

mmeditz I have a 77 Convincer that we purchased from my Father-Inlaw a couple of years ago. I believe it has a 302 in it. I love it, not only because it runs like a champ, but because you just don't see old boats like this anymore. I always get stopped at the ramp, or on the beach and asked what it is and how old it is.

My Checkmate is a 1980 with an I/O. I love the sound and feel and wouldn't trade it for anything, but I have to admit the outboards seem to require less work.

Hey Red, You are dreaming! You just wish that io's were catching up. I talked to Kip last week and he told me that the only thing being built right now was OUTBOARDS! Go 2 strokes!:cheers boatman

Listen here HILLBILLY :poke: you new i would read this thread if you dragged it back up. And I did , I highly dout Checkmate is building anything right now times are tuff for everybody

Let me think for a minute lets see what I have stored in my head:confused:

Oh yah this is what I wanted to tell you, the five fastest Checkmates that have been pictured on this site over time are all I/O 's and let me toss this in their, they all run over 100 mph GPS- and Radar :bigthumb: single engine

Besides its uncool cranking them smoke bombs up you call a O/B in front of hot chicks at the sand bar. Try to explain to a dumb blonde why it smokes so much:cheers

I wonder if it has anything to do with aging, I mean even a lot of the older outboards on here have been repowered- a relatively easy task with an outboard, how many older I/Os went to the dump (or the backyard till the wood rotted out) when the engine kicked it?

Red, You just gotta keep her distracted, I've found that flexing the guns or putting a stuffed tube sock in the board shorts stops her from askin about the smoke

I'm sure that's a big part of it....after much reading on this site it seems like once an I/O boat is tired it's one thing after another with the outdrive and engine. And nothing associated with an outdrive problem is cheap to fix. BOAT=Bring Out Another Thousand.

How many cubic inches and how much HP does it take to mane an io go that fast?:poke: boatman:rof:

In all fairness it depends on the size boat. If you took a 28' Convincor I really feel that you could stick it over 100 Cheaper than you could using Outboards which would be at least 2 of them hopped up.

I really don't know if anybody on this board has stuck a Checkmate outboard over 100.

If you tell me the size boat maybe I can come up with some good BS. I need some kind of scale to give you a cubic inch and hp rating like wait of boat being used

Truthfully if I had 2 boats just alike 1 O/B and 1 I/O and both engines where shot I would fix the O/B much easier to bolt another one on and ride.
