Engine cover / sun deck

Not sure if this is the right place to ask... I currently have my engine cover off (fiberglass gel inside, pad on top) for some mechanical work. Out in the lake on a short test run today, I noticed how much quicker the boat comes out of the hole without that heavy azz cover (est 200lbs.) [I suspect that I'd get 1-2 more mph top end also, but "break in" of my new drive prevented proving that theory today.] Has me thinking that I'd like to build a new one - significantly lighter. Any thoughts on how to go about this, or has anyone done similar weight loss projects?

200 lbs is like taking a passenger out :D

Yep, the wood under the foam has mutated into a heavy mushy black foreign substance... All there yet - but seems to be perma-wet and OMG heavy. (Looks like it was replaced with two layers of wolmanized plywood screwed together at some point in it's prior history ... 3/8" over 1/2")
