Engine cuts out

I am finding out that when you own an old boat you always have something to do. Every couple of weeks seems to be a new problem.

Have an 89 convincor with a 496. It runs real strong until I hit and land a big wave. When I land the engine cuts out. Sometimes as little as a second, sometimes as long as 10 or 15. Always keeps running. I have checked all connections and all are good. I have run the boat in the driveway and pulled and wiggled all wires from the bow to the stearn and can't make it quit. Anyone have any ideas????

Sounds to me like it could be a bad ground, faulty ignition or possibly a broken cell in a battery...

My Scarab I had a few years ago had a similar problem. It was in the main harness where it plugs into the engine harness. Are you pulling back quick on the gas when you hit the wave? Maybe the carb is running too rich and dumping too much gas in.That would make it stumble like that. Also check the neutral cut out switch. When you shift into neutral or reverse you should hear the engine cut out for a second. That allows the lower unit gears to go in and out smoothly. Its far fetched but sometimes it can be something stupid like that. You always got a few problems to straighten out when you get an older boat but in the long run its worth it!

Everything on the ignition system is new except the thunderbolt IV box. All the grounds have been disassembled and cleaned.

The battery seems interesting to me. I run with the battery switch on both. I will try to run on 1 and two to see if it makes a differance. Both batteries are new but ya never know. Maybe one shorts when I hit a bump.

Thanks Bill!!!

I did think about the neutral cut out as I don't hear the engine cut out when I shift. Maybe that thing is shorted or something. I will just replace it.....if I knew where it was.
Where is the thing???

I don't pull back on the gas...I'm not that good yet

Oh........I did disassemble and clean the harness. Also pulled and wiggled it real hard with the engine running. Did not make the engine stumble.

I've worked on alot of Alphas but I believe its probably in the same location on a Bravo drive. The switch is located on the shift cable bracket which is mounted to your drivers side exhaust riser.Look in between the two cables, I believe its integrated with the lower cable. Its definetly something you want adjusted properly.Your lower unit gears will thank you in the long run.Plus, it will shift a lot smoother! That battery switch is another possibility too.You haven fun yet?

Got the boat out on the water yesterday. It ran perfect for the first hour. Sat for about an hour and on the way back it cut out for only a second. I was running in 3-4 footers and some bigger.

I didn't have a chance to mess with the batteries. It was getting ruff and the wife wanted land.

I couldn't find the neutral cut out thing. Could it be somewhere else?

I checked out the wiring diagram for a bravo and they don't show a shift interrupter switch. So the shift set up must not be the same as an alpha. I'd still check the battery connections. Also pull a couple plugs and see how its running. If they're black then you know theres something going on in the carb. Keep the faith!

does your boat do this all the time or only when it's warm? a friend of mine told me the other day his boat used to do the same thing. He replaced all the elec parts, come to find out he had a broken coil wire it seperated when it got hot & soft but kept a good connection when it was cold. check it with an ohm meeter when it gets hot. you might find nothing but it could save you a lot of money.....

I did check all the wires in the harness. I will take a VOM out with me the next time and test it when it is hot. At this point I may just replace the harness to be sure.

I was also thinking about replaceing the Thunderbolt IV box. If I remember right Vinny had mentioned that these boxes go out slowly. I was also thinking bout going with the Crane control box.

Thanks everyone for all the ideas.
