Engine dies when shifting into reverse.

I just bought and 87 checkmate senator with a 350. it runs great ran it about 68mph yesterday. no issues at all excrpt when i try to shift in to reverse the engine cuts off. any idea what that might be or how i can fix it. id like to be able to use reverse.

prabably your interutpter switch... or somethin hangin up in the linkage plate gizmo-thingy holdin the switch closed to long. You can unplug it and find out in hurry, but be careful it may stick in gear while your "testing"

+1

Be prepared to jiggle the shifter to get it to pop back out and also to shut the key off to get it to if necessary.

Welcome to the site, post some pics of the boat!

your problem is likely the transom shift cable has stretched and needs to be adjusted. once done, you should have your gears back. as also mentioned the interupter switch could be bad.

btw - this is my 2000th post - cool :)

OK, thank you all for the input.
So... where exactly would I find the location of the linkage use to adjust the cable for the throttle used to go into reverse and also where would that switch be located?
I am new to this boating thing. I do like to fix things myself. Would appreceate any info or procedure on how to fix this. Thanks.

Alos, I will post pics very soon.
