Fastest sub 20' checkmate hull

Wow great east, 85 and you aren't even running the best prop yet? You are going to hit 90 aren't you, let me know when you do, what RPM you are turning, everything i have researched on stock BP motors is they make their peak HP at around 7K and up till about 7400 are still doing good then they drop off. I am never going to get rid of this light weight high power engine, it's just awesome, I just want to find a better boat for it for the future. So you are stable at high speeds? even my starflite gets squirly at 70, I have heard you can drive through it but I don't have enough HP to do that.

Yep sorry for the typo 2.4 BP not sure of exact speeds as this was in the early to mid 80's so he only had the good ole dreamometer..

I got 86 last year. :) Just haven't had a ton of time to play solo yet. Hopin to hit 90 this year, that's the plan. I'm right around 7k at 85. Very stable at high speeds...i can seriously let go of the wheel at 80.

I'm an outboard guy but the fastest sub 20 checkmate would be an i/o. There is no replacement for displacement. Phrased another way: There's only one thing better than cubes...and that's more cubes. Local guy had a 19 or 20 foot checkmate w/ roughly a blown 750 hp. Blackhawk drive Mercruiser. The thing went 115ish, no joke. 102ish w/ same motor naturally aspirated. He never got the nitrous hooked up.

hats off to you!!! :thumb:

its amazing how everything changes @ about the 70 mph mark, the last time i was out, i had a 28 chopper at 1/2 below the pad, i dont know how fast i was goin'.. i forgot the gps, but the motor was spinin' just below 6k, holdin on to the wheel like nobodys bussiness, and i think i needed new shorts after it walked just a little bit, and that was enough for me that day, then 20 minutes later i got that stupid ticket!!!

illmattic drove this boat faster than i probably ever will !!! oh well, at least i can say it has been over 80...even if i cant drive!!

wow, that does sound stable at high speeds, I guess that is why they call it a "predictor" it's "predictable". I always felt like my MX-15 could go much faster but that the bigger engine would be too much for the hull/transom, and my MX had a small pad like the predictor. I think I am going to keep my eyes out for a hull only predictor project now.

hey buss, you may want to look into getting solid motor mounts. after seeing the ones i have now, yours seem a bit weak. solid mounts would true it up a bit.

actually i already got 'em,:thumb: but i havent had time to pop the powerhead off to put them in, i put the trim on the wheel, and i got a torque tamer to install, just runnin out of summer in a hurry....

Mr.B, I would have thought that you could turn the 28 Chopper more then 6k. Maybe you need to take it up a lil more. Maybe a 1/2 inch above the pad.

you will be able to turn that prop at 6400 all day long.

i ran 78.1 with a 28P chopper
79 with a 29P mazco RE3
81.7 with a 30P hoss triton. i only got to make a couple runs with this one. i bet it had a bit more left in it.

all ran 6300-6400 @ .5 above the pad.

the hoss pulled like the 26P laserII and had MAD bow lift.

you'll get it, just takes a little while...changing to solid mounts will help for sure, once you figure it out you're really gonna love that boat.
:)

Yep what he said ^^^^^

If I were to make a river rocket checkmate Ide beef up a predictor or SPORTFIRE. Add a wider pad, gut everything, make it a center steer single seat, Evolution powered OMC v8 Monster. In theory it would run well over 100mph, but Ive heard that shorter boats have a "terminal velocity" so to speak, where as a longer boat, although a bit heavier would run faster....??? Either way a Bridgeport on any sub 20' hull is gonna scream! Keep us posted if you decide to go for it!

Have you considered any other hulls? Ide love to have a small hydrostream, or even my sutphen w/ a bp.,...

LOL, true true. Well, kinda. I've been an outboard guy for years and only now have my first V8 I/O. I think there is a point where pound for pound, pony for pony, and I/O will be faster than an outboard, but it involves cubic inches and that means cubic dollars. :D My stock 250hp V8 in my Persuader is a dog by all accounts, but this winter i plan a big build up and maybe even big block power. I need 80mph in the worst way :shakehead: But that same amount of $$$ would be me a heck of a nice 300x merc that would likely do the same thing with 1/4 of the fuel ;)

I talked with the owner of that checkmate. It was just a tick under 19' (model?) Anyways, he had a 548 in it / blower. He said the boat hull was probably not intended to go that fast (?) and the front deck/dash would move up and down 4 inches at wot. Yikes. His competition was an Allison Supersport /280, which he blew off and a 19 foot Glastron CV19 w/ a 572 and tons of nitrous (250 hp added) which he also beat.

wow a blown 500 cu in motor in a little 19' checkmate, that guy should be a test pilot for checkmate. I have looked at a lot of hull options for my BP motor and the best would be a tunnel of course, I have always liked the the HST's and allisons, especially the GT-20 love that boat. But for me it's about speed and looks, not just speed. I will take the checkmate over any other boats, just for looks alone. I think going 85+ in a nice looking predictor that is practical and affordable with an iddy biddy outboard is amazing accomplishment.
