Fried Wiring Harness

I was doing a favor for a friend over the weekend and helped him assess a boat he was looking to by. The seller stated that he fried the wiring harness on his 90hp Johnson 4stroke. Apparently he hooked up the jumper/battery reversed. I immediately took a step back and thought what connected to that harness would fry and came to the conclusion that nearly every electrical component on that motor was at risk? I'm sure the ECU because it is constantly hot even with the ignition off? The injectors should have a hot lead at all times? What would cause such a massive current dump to literally melt the harness?

This is a curiosity question as I told him to run away. The price was low, but the costs to get the motor running and the overall condition of the boat were more than he or I really want to take on.
