Gear Grind/Clunk

I recently disassembled and lubricated the remote control on my Spectra 171 that has a 1988 Evinrude 150 Hp V6 outboard engine because it had become very difficult to use the pull out neutral position and impossible to shift into reverse. What a difference this repair made! All positions of the control (forward, reverse, pull out neutral) are now easy to use as they should be. However, when I shift into either forward or reverse there is a slight grinding of gears, nothing drastic, just a slight clunking noise. My question, is this normal or is there a cable or throttle adjustment that I can make to eliminate the noise?
 
Push it straight into gear and it will give a bit of a clunk. That is what you want. Easing into gear is not good for the clutch dogs. Make sure your idle speed is set right, 750rpms when in gear on my old Chizzler. :thumb:

Thanks redstart, I wasn't aware that easing into gear is not good. From now on I will push it straight into gear. Also, I will check my idle speed because I think it is set at about 650 rpm. If so I will up it to 750 rpm. Thanks again for the advice.
 
If you have no issues with the engine idling at 650 RPM, I wouldn't change it. I think red mentioned the RPMs because quite often people fix engine problems with a higher idle setting and the higher idle setting causes gear binding when shifting in and out of neutral. He was probably making sure you werent idling near 1000

Finally a day with no rain and some free time so I took my boat out today to test the advice I received from redstrat and JW. First I tried just pushing the shift lever straight into gear. The result was no gear grind and a very slight noise, almost not even a clunk. Then I checked the idle rpm while in gear. It was just under 700 rpm so am not going to make any adjustments. Thanks to both redstrat and JW for their good advice.
